There are people who have bought NOOKs internationally. Bear in mind, however, that most B&N e-books aren't available outside of the US, the toll-free Customer Support number is only usable in the US, and the warranty is only valid in the US. Also, the in-store features aren't usable unless you're in a store (of course), and there are no B&N stores outside of the US. Officially, B&N accounts are only open to US residents.
Is there some reason you really want a NOOK? You'll lose almost all of the advantages when using it in Canada. |

Activate, yes. They call it "register". Technically you aren't permitted to sign up for an account to register with unless you're a US resident, but in practice nobody cares and they go ahead and sign up anyway. You'll need a Wi-Fi connection to perform the registration.
3G, no. The 3G is US-only, and only connects to the B&N e-book store anyway. |

If you don't need B&N or support, go for it. Like Doug advised, 3G gets you access to BN store only. You don't have to activate it to use it as a reader. You just won't have any access to the BN Shop. But you can sideload all the content you want and read stuff that way.

I have a Nook wifi (the 3g doesn't work here and it's only for book purchases anyway) and it works fine here. I just have my B&N account linked to a US address (and my B&N shipping address it the same US address). I can buy B&N books and also get side loaded books from anywhere as long as they're epub.
There is a thread stickied at the top of the Nook forum for international users. |

I just got mine mid-January and I was able to register it just fine. I even purchased a couple of books on the bn.com website and as soon as I registered they were automatically in "my bn Library" on my Nook.
I do list a US billing address on my BN.com account, but it's not mine and it certainly isn't my billing address. Looks like BN doesn't actually validate that info. Just wanted to say that I love my Nook!!! |

I went down last week and got a Nook Color. No problems with wifi connection. Used my U.S mailing address for an address when I registered.

I have a classic. It connects to my public library open wifi with a strong signal indicated. Then I tap my BN library and check for new content and I get the message 'network not available' EVERYTIME I try. I have a purchase on my BN account which shows as not downloaded. Any suggestions?? Why does wifi not work as it should for me in Canada. In a BN store in Buffalo, it worked automatically as advertised - updated to 1.5, downloaded purchases, showed store specials etc.

ibdave: it has nothing to do with being in Canada. It's something about your home Wi-Fi setup that's incompatible. The first thing to try is resetting everything:

Problem Solved - followed Doug Pardee's suggestion upto turn nook back on
Then I went to Starbuck's (free wifi don't ya know). After nook connected, had to select "web" from the home touch screen and select "I agree" to their conditions and everything worked as expected. |
