Rainy/snowy morning... just made for tea. This morning a steaming mug of Yorkshire tea to start me off. (Side order of rice, miso soup, and Oreo cookies.)

Speaking of Oreos... you've probably eaten them many times, right? So what's the design imprinted on each side? Can you guess without looking?

Astra wrote; Maybe I misunderstood or got confused but my wiser/better/smarter 2/3s told me yesterday that you have two big stores Fortnum & Mason in Japan. It was her guess why you know this brand.

Fortnum & Mason have been in Japan since the late 80's, but only as 'sections' of upscale department stores; little cubicles about 4mX4m with shelves filled with their teas, and a tea lady to hand out samples and take cash. They had no shops of their own. It was in one of these department store sections that I first found Fortnum & Mason and continued buying for the next 15 years.

Then in 1999 F&M opened two stores in Japan, one in Tokyo and one in Nagoya. These were dedicated tea stores. This corresponded in time roughly to the opening of several of the kitchen equipment stores 'Williams-Sonoma' and a push in Japan to learn more international cuisines.

Unfortunately, they were all premature. Today William-Sonoma only remains in Tokyo. All the other shops have closed. I believe that this is also true of Fortum & Mason, and it's even possible that the F&M Tokyo shop has closed. I've tried calling several times in the past and got no answer. You've given me inspiration to try to contact them again. I'll let you know what I discover.

I agree. Maybe because of no tannins and no caffeine? I often drink it at night, and as a matter of fact I'm having a cup right now.

Interesting agriculture in Washington State. We can't get Hairy Ginger in Japan.

All the same, nothing like ginger to calm the stomach! Ginger Ale, Ginger Snap cookies (my mother's favorite,) candied ginger, or fresh. I guess if you get it really fresh and young it hasn't had time to grow the beard.

Being young and adventurous, while in a Chinese shop today I picked up some new teas; a bulk packaged keemun, pressed pellets of Pu-erh, and pressed pellets of oolong, none of which had any other information about them.

So far, the pressed pellet of Pu-erh patently puts pleasure passed my pallet. The oolong was insipid when sipped, and I'm about to try the keemun. It's steeping now.

Astra... I saw Houjicha in the Japanese import store today! Its name was written in Roman letters and in Japanese Hiragana characters, the first beginning with the 'H' sound, rather than the 'OO' sound one one see in the name Uji. Also, Uji would be written in Kanji, the Chinese characters taken for use by the Japanese, and that was NOT the case on this box of tea. The Hiragana characters would make me pronounce it as Ha-O-U-ji cha, rather than Hoo-ji cha. The box was sitting between a box of Sencha and a box of Bancha, all three by the same company.

Edit: The keemun is OK, but just. Nothing to write home about, and not one to be repurchased.

I'm pretty sure 0.09 means 9 minutes after 12 I think everyone in Europe uses the 24hour clock. Well, except the British of course

Yes, it is midnight and 9 minutes. Actually I shouldn't have taken my iPad to bed; didn't sleep until 2.00 o'clock. I usually take my Kindle to read.
