Troubleshooting new user-cant shut off voice

First thing I did was drag a PDF onto my kindle3. Works great, YA!, then I tired the txt to voice. Found out how to turn it on, did and it worked wonderfull. But now I want to shut it off. When I hit the Aa button the only choices i get are the landscape settings, font, voice, etc are all grayed out and it will not let me move the coursor up to them to change them. I have not registrered my kindle, i have only had it for about an hour (i have tired with it on charger and off). I have tired with it l=plugged into PC and not. I have rebooted with the power switch. The fold out book is sorta no help at all.
HELP!

Stupid new user issue. I was looking at a PDF. No way to put that to VOICE, so no options for voice. Sorry for wasting a post Problem solved.
