This is awesome! Thanks to NiLuJe for putting this together!... I'm expecting a K3 3g wifi international/US in the mail... can't wait to 'personalize' it!

I also was converting the images/photos to b&w till I thought about it. . why bother with that step? The Kindle only shows b&w anyhow so I just size to 600X800 and if it needs contrast I do that but leave it color. Works perfectly and sometimes there is no need to do any thing but resize the image.

But that wastes extra space of the limited 4GB flash memory.

Many thanks for the screensaver hack.

I now have the screensaver do something useful: I only have one image in my screen saver folder, this one (but with my full mobile number, of course):

Kindle DX (US)

So I've gone through the thread, I've read every bit of instruction and the entire change log...

Yet I'm having a small problem.

(btw this is on a Kindle DX US 3G + WiFi ver#: 3.0.3)

I've gotten the Jailbreak zip, and the screensaver zip as the whole point of me reading everything I've read up and to this point is to stop having to see Agatha Christy every time I sleep my kindle...

Here is my problem:

I place the update_jailbreak_0.4.N_dx_install.bin file in the root of my kindle, safely remove my kindle from my OS (XP Pro Corp.) Then I hit Menu / Go to settings / select settings / hit menu again.... At this point I should be able to select "update kindle" and get the magic started.... However it seems that my kindle does not recognize that there is a .bin file there as "Update Kindle" remains greyed out and un-selectable.

At this point I'm at a loss, because everything I've read says I should be rocking some new screensaver images by now... But being I can't get past the initial jailbreak step, I've got no where to turn but to ask for some help.

Also keep in mind that I know how to update, I did it with 3.0.3 so I know it's capable of understanding...

*EDIT:* After re-reading the beginning of this thread I noticed the note about my particular concern.... I'm now going to attempt to install a different .bin file...

*EDIT #2:* Well I had though that when I read what I brought up in my first *EDIT* that I might be a little slow, and had just missed an important part.... Thus leaving me to try the RIGHT .bin file.

I have now tried all 3 DX .bin files just to be sure and all have had the same result. ("Update Kindle" in the settings /menu is greyed out and un-selectable.)

The following files:
update_jailbreak_0.4.N_dx_install.bin (For the Kindle DX US)
update_jailbreak_0.4.N_dxg_install.bin (For the Kindle DX Graphite - which I know I don't have)
update_jailbreak_0.4.N_dxi_install.bin (For the Kindle DX GW )

None of those gave my kindle the ability to "update." And as preforming a "Reboot" update is a bad idea at best... I'm once again at a loss.

Thanks

Thanks to all who contribute to this great site. I just finished putting new screen-savers on my Kindle 3 and it was so easy with the instructions found here. Hopefully someday I'll be able to repay your kindness with some tips of my own.

At this point I'm not sure if you succeeded or not.

But you place the .bin file in the root. Then you REBOOT the kindle - using Home, Menu, Settings, Menu, Restart. This .bin is not an Amazon update - it will not appear as an update in the menu system.

The instructions warn you may get a failure notice/error message. That is okay.

Next you do the same with the screensaver .bin file. It is not a menu update - reboot as above.

Then you need to load some photos in the appropriate folder. And then REBOOT yet again. Each time you add or change photos you need to reboot.

Good luck

From what I understand that is something you're NOT suppose to do.

As mentioned here in the first post:

Don't try to force a custom update by rebooting your Kindle. You should *always* install custom hacks via the Settings page. If the 'Update Your Kindle' link is greyed out, it's because you uploaded the wrong binfile for your device. Don't try to force an install by rebooting. It'll, at best, fail, and at worst, force you to start your Kindle in recovery mode to delete the offending update.

Also note that, while there is a zipfile for the usbnetwok hack attached here, I won't provide any support for it, and I strongly discourage anyone not well versed in bare-bone Linux CLI system administration to even try it. It's far too easy to brick your device/mess up the software with that thing.

I have solved my problem... It turns out I was using the incorrect .bin file... As the DX 3g+wifi does not require any of the dx .bin files, but rather the 3g .bin file...

carry on...

I can't seem to find the download for SSTimeOut v0.03.N anywhere, did this get pulled? I'm tempted to use 0.02N from some older pages on google but not sure what to do.

I'm on "latest generation" (3) Kindle 3G+wifi B006 3.0.2

Yes it got pulled. It's written multiple times in this thread, but I suppose you didn't read it since it's so long.

A tutorial for it is here:

I found a copy of the SS Timeout hack in this thread. I can't remember which page it was on. (This was about a week ago.) It worked fine on my Kindle.

EDIT: It's on page 61 of this thread. Post #1210.

After that I ejected my Kindle and wanted to do a soft reboot, but the Menu button wouldn't work so I had todo a hard reboot. (I held the On/Off switch over for 15 seconds.)

Upon reboot, I can't get into my settings menu! I'm worried! I hope I didn't screw things up badly!

The good news is that I backed up the old (hack) fonts before I overwrote them with the new fonts that I got from NodDog's site. I haven't tried reloading them yet.

Can anybody tell me what I should do next? I feel like I'm in over my head!

EDIT: I should say that when I try to get into the Settings page, I get taken right back to the Home page.

EDIT EDIT: When I reinstall the fonts that came with the hack, I can get back into the Settings (and Experimental) menu. It's only when I replace the Serif_*.TTL files that I get locked out.
Do you still have this problem Re: EDIT?

I had similar problem but after reading here I managed to put together what has been discussed in different posts and solve same problem like the one you had/have.

I thought was just me happened to have that problem coz no one else mentioned here (or may be I havent read all the posts)

anyway let me know.

Newbie question: I have a new Kindle International 3G + WiFi ver#: 3.0.2. Which is the right code to use for selecting jailbreak bin file?

I've jailbroken my Kindle 3 Wifi months ago, however even tough I'm very comfortable with trying things like these I found it quite hard to understand how:
You update the jailbreak.
You uninstall the jailbreak.
Maybe someone could explain it in simple terms?
The Update part was the one I had more trouble understanding.

Edit: I did manage to uninstall the jailbreak and resinstall it.
I just thought it's worth knowing that some things weren't easy to understand. That's all.
