Just curious:

What exactly did you tell them to make them replace it? Do they require you to ship it back to them?

I am just asking because, while many companies have a warranty for defects in the device, I have never seen a company replace a device due to the user's own fault (breakage).

Thanks for the explanation. I have now read about Amazon sending a free replacement to others as well.

Frankly, I was divided whether to get the Kindle or not, as well as for its longevity. My Sony PRS-505 is made of aluminium and is built like a tank. The Kindle seems flimsy and while I have ordered a case for it, I am very happy to know that in case I have any trouble with it, Amazon has a fairly good attitude towards supporting it.

While Amazon.com CS is pretty great, I think you should take these reports as in YMMV (your mileage may vary).

if you use it as a frisbee or tap dance on it, sure, you will have a problem, but they are fairly rugged little units

Amazon and Apple have both replaced devices for me.

My Kindle 2 froze after about a year and a half, after I added collections to it for the first time. I had an extended warranty, but Amazon's CS offered a replacement without any apparent interest in the extended warranty. I think Amazon is willing to eat the cost of a Kindle because you buy books.

Apple replaced my iPhone 4 after I dropped it from about 4 feet onto ceramic tile. Totally my fault. I took it to an Apple shop, showed the CS guy the screen and said, "Can you help me?" (I expected to pay for a repair.) He smiled and said, "What happened." I said, "It fell." (What else could've happened? Suicide?) He said they'd give me a new one as a one-time courtesy.

Heck, I dunno whether I will stick with Amazon or Apple forever (I'm a mercenary consumer), but any of their competitors have to offer me that type of service or better.

I was being sarcastic, but yeah... doing what you did is kind of a retarded thing to do. You broke your device, and then you lied and told them that it was their fault when it wasn't. If lots of people keep doing this and abusing their CS, we will see a decline in the quality of their CS.

I have broken tons of things trying to reflash them with different firmwares, mod them with aftermarket parts / solder, etc. When I mess up and break something, or a flash goes bad and the device doesn't work... I don't go hey X company, your product stops working. I usually just order a new ROM, jtag/tty, logic board, or whatever I broke if I really want to use the product. They would likely replace the device even if you told them the truth, however if they would not, it's likely that they would sell you a replacement screen or offer to ship you a refurb at some reduced cost.

I just wish you could ease up on your language... First, my signature was offending to you and now my posts. I took your signature comment as a good natured humor thingy, but now I know. And also, its been 6 months since I have been on this forum, and I have always found you having SOME problem with SOME poster out there.
