the industry chose ePub when it could have chosen mobi. sort of like the movie industry supporting blu ray instead of hd dvd.

Mobi is now a small player as where ePub is now the major player. Sounds like they all made sound business decisions.
The industry chose EPub to try and put pressure on Amazon. They are hoping that people buy into the EPub vs Mobi BS and that they can, collectivly, reduce Amazons ebook share.

Mobi is still the dominant player based on number of ebooks sold. Just because more places sell EPub does not mean that 1) there are more epub books avaialble or 2) that EPub is dominant.

I was referncing Sony. When the Nook came out Sony has an inferior site with higher prices. I think it is safe to say That Sony's bookstore is still inferior, I have no idea about the prices. Kobo wasn't even around at the time.

And while BN is closing the gap, Amazon is still the better bookstore. Which is why some Nook Color users are rooting their Nook Colors and downloading the Kindle for Android app and buying some of their books from Amazon.
If I owned a kindle and a nook color I too would root it so I could download the Kindle App, that is where your library is.
I'm surprised more aren't going this route, You can now have both bookstores, ePub support, library lending all without losing your Kindle Library and still the ability to shop at Amazon.

I think if you own a kindle device, owning something like a nook color (rooted) is nice marriage.

I don't think it so much they want to reduce Amazon's share, Ithink it's more so they isn't just one device with one company dictating the industry. That benefits no one, not even the kindle owners.

I welcome competition. I don't want amazon to go away, it's keeps BN on their toes and keeps them to improve and vice versa.

That is, I wonder if they are using "lowest common denominator" only in terms of keeping their mobi and epub editions similar (like, presumably, O'Reily does) or if they are using "lowest common denominator" in terms of reader capabilities.

If it's the latter, that somewhat negates most of ePubs potential advantages, even if a publisher wanted to exploit them.
If it's only the former, you'd think powerful epub sellers like B&N would demand their books feature the enhanced capabilities to show some superiority over Amazon.
Yes, all ePub readers that I know of support all the features I listed, including embedded fonts and SVG.

Those of us with Kindles can have all that with the one device.
It seems that violating B&Ns terms of use by rooting carries the same ethical concerns and unsupported tech issues as does space-shifting ADE content.

The only reason to add a nook color to the mix as I see it is if you REALLY want color display, and are willing to read on a backlit LCD, are ok with shorter battery life, and have an extra several hundred dollars to spend on it.

I would not buy a Nook COlor, I would buy an android tablet. That way I don't have to worry about hacking anything and I would have all the access I needed.

I'd actually like a convertible tablet PC, if they were better and cheaper than they are currently. Android is interesting, but still too fractured for my liking. I'm probably a generation or two away from taking the plunge on any tablet, but I like the idea.

doesn't dell have that "flip" laptop, where the screen folds down and you have an instant tablet. albeit a 3 lb tablet. But I thought it looked interesting.

Also the Nook will run both B&N DRM and Adobe's DRM. If they wanted to LOCK people out then why allow Adobe DRM on the nook? They could have done what Amazon or Apple did and made it near impossible for the average person to buy books from anyone else but them.

But I can buy books from Sony or Borders just about anyone else and even borrow books from the library without any difficulty at all. How is this locking people in?

Yes, they do, at $550!!

And it's just a netbook-class Atom processor. Too rich for my blood.
And I can only imagine how fragile it might be.

My boss had a Fujitsu convertible a few years back. It fell apart on him.

Like I said, I'll wait for another generation or two of pioneers to take the arrows in the back.

I think it's pretty clear that the idea of a tablet is more than a passing fad.
I suspect that is where personal computers are headed in general.

BN has nothing to fear from the various bok stores that sell books DRMed with the Adobe DRM. Sony has a weak selection and used to be more expensive. Kobo does not have as good a selection as BN. The independent stores do not have the same selection as BN and fill in the niche gaps that exist at BN.

Essentially, BN is not going to be losing business to those stores and BN knows that. It is like telling folks that you are free to shop from our fully stocked grocery store and hey, its ok to bring in stuff from the store next door. The one where the shelves are half empty and everything is over priced.

It looks nice but really, there is not much there. BN looks magnanimous and still makes money from the sales of its ebooks.

I was considering getting one, but all the reviews report a poor (3h) battery life, and dismally slow performance. I posted a thread in the Lounge about it.

yeah you still get the laptop battery life but someone has to break ground somewhere. Should be an interesting future for these. Because nothing replaces a physical keyboard.

I always thought it looked cool.

I shop at Kobo a heck of alot more than I shop at Barnes and Noble. BN is nice and convienant but when I'm planted at home I'm an avid shop around and Kobos coupons are the best.
