I don't see a place to logon at freelibrary.org, I always go straight to http://freelibrary.lib.overdrive.com and log on there - the advanced search and everything is there. when you pick out a book you add it to your cart and then checkout. After you checkout you will get the download button.

nwinter I am not sure what your problem is, but I usually browse the FLP page without logging in. When I find something I like I add it to the cart--that's where the sign in page appears. After typing in account number and pin I am able to check items out.

For those who are concerned about the collection size of FLP, you can always write to the librarians directly and ask them if they can acquire the titles you want. I usually check the overdrive site first. If an item has a "find at a library" icon, the FLP can almost always get it for you within a week (according to my experience, not sure if they can keep up the speed if more people suggest items). They are very helpful and I've suggested and happily borrowed more than ten titles so far (both audiobooks and ebooks). I hope more people can suggest books they think are good or interesting, because then we will have a respectable collection in FLP which everyone can benefit from. As for waiting period of books, my longest wait so far was "Eat, love, and pray." I was 19th on the list when I joined the wait (which rarely happened. Usually there are less than 5 people waiting for the same books I am interested in) and got the title after waiting for about a month. If you keep enough books on your hold list, you can generally get something new to read every 2 or 3 days. I absolutely love the service of FLP, and would recommend it anytime without hesitation. (Thank you again, Almas!) |

Oh, this is so tantalizing! There are two authors I'm currently wanting to read, Ben Bova (the many books in the Grand Tour especially) and P.G. Wodehouse (looking for his post-1923 works, especially those centered on Blandings Castle).

I probably haven't searched FLP right. From the home page, I selected digital collections and whether I typed in Wodehouse or Bova, I found zero hits! Which was hard to believe given how popular they are (and how prolific). I also tried the direct search tool for the ebook collection http://freelibrary.lib.overdrive.com...ncedSearch.htm selecting Adobe epub. Again, zero! Have their publishers have choked off library lending? Of course, I remember getting hooked on series books in the old days and going to the library to get, say, #4, and discovering it was out. A disappointment for sure. I wonder if the same thing happens regularly with digital lending. There is a real advantage to just going ahead and buying a set and reading at one's leisure! |

I use this to search (I got the link from support at the Philadelphia free library): search.overdrive.com. I see a lot of Ben Bova EPubs, but I don't think they are available for the libraries (there is no "Find at a Library" button). |

Update on my quest for a card from FLP - I mailed in the application with a check on 12/29; the check cleared my bank on 1/11, but so far nothing from the library.

Yesterday I sent an email asking about the progress of the card, and whether I should be looking for something by snail mail or email - received a response pretty quick. The response was, "A card was mailed on January 6, 2011. It is up to the USPS to get it to you now." Hmmm - wonder why I need to even have a physical card if all I need is a number. I'm thinking I'll give it a few more days and then send another email asking if they can't email to me. |

I sent them a scanned application via email on Jan 17; they replied on Jan 18, saying they received my application and that I would hear from them in 5-10 business days with instructions on payment for my library card. Can't wait - as soon as the 10 day are up I'm contacting them if they don't get back to me by then

I'm impressed with the FLP selection, but some of the waiting lists are long. I'm number 30 on one title.

Now here's an oddity--I checked my home library, which has a good-sized e-book collection, and it has ZERO copies of the e-book. (It does have the audio book, however.) Makes no sense! |

I have all the Wodehouse p.d. ones (his public school stories are great) and, many years ago, bought or was given several print ones. But many of the post-1923 are small font size and borrowing books is so much the nicer way to go. Save for when you can't get them! ![]() Too bad about Bova! Hmm... buying time?
