First, let me say that I have the Nook Color and love it. I bought it the day after root was developed, and rooted it 1 hour after I bought it. That said, 80% of my use is as a reader.

Reading through the posts in this thread, I saw some references to updates. I gotta say that although the SGT has 2.2; and NC only 2.1; I am more optimistic for updates on the Nook. I have been following some of the rumors for the 2.2 update that Samsung STILL has not issued for the Vibrant; and that apparently Samsung is pressuring T-Mobile NOT to release. The reason: Samsung has a new phone coming out that they want T-Mobile to push; and they expect that is the 2.2 upgrade were available, it would slow sales for their new phone. Now those are just some internet rumors; but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I would encourage the OP to give the NC a try - for the price, it can't be beat.

If the OP is really considering $750 for a SGT, I would suggest she hold out a little long because in another 3-6 months, I think there will be a lot more tablets available in that price range.

P.S. - Care - can you explain your Avatar? is that Moiraine?

I just read in the android sub-forum that there is a wifi SGT coming and a bunch more (with more reasonable prices). I am thinking of waiting even though I really like the idea of a full tablet. I will probably get the NC since it is the more affordable option and I am looking for a night reader mostly, not all the other jazz.

Yes, it is! I love Moiraine, she totally rocks and I think I relate to her and Egwene the most. She is featured on the Fires of Heaven ebook cover. They just released the cover pic for the last book, The Towers of Midnight, and it features one of Perrin's finest moments. I really love these covers and I pray someday they do a box set in hardback with these covers when the series is finished.

Edit to add full cover:

The Tab is nice, but a couple of cameras, GPS, bluetooth, and a little exra oomph aren't worth twice the price to me (~$250). And I would certainly never pay for the monthly data contract. I don't really need that stuff anyway on a tablet.

Soon XDA will probably have the BT working on the NC (if B&N doesn't add it to their official 2.2 update) - that's my biggest want.

I don't see the Tab as being worth $500. I hate the ipad and itunes and I'd probably still buy an iPad over it (not that I would buy an ipad).

A lot better tablets are going to undercut it soon. I doubt the NC will be undercut as the best bang/buck tablet any time soon - B&N is surely selling it at a very marginal profit at $250. I think the question is really whether to get the NC or to wait.

I will say that I think for someone that likes ebooks, the NC is a better buy as a rooted tablet than a non-reader.

Do you know the Os difference between Honeycom and Froyo? How many popular apps are right now running on Froyo vs Honeycom? I do have several apps on Froyo that has been already optimized for Galaxy's screen.

I installed Honeycom on my cellphone. Nice, beautiful, until I discovered that some apps were broken or totally out of Android Market. Have you used Honeycom on your device??? If you have, does not look like you know what are you talking about, sorry.
Why would you say something like this? You have done no such a thing.

Every single device that supports Adobe ePubs has a license (and the API hooks) to support B&N ePubs. Most licensees have decided not to support them, presumably for business reasons. Bluefire on the iPad, is an exception in that it supports both Adobe and B&N ePubs. There were press reports, which sounded like they came directly from Aldiko, that Aldiko would also support B&N ePubs. I guess they changed their mind about implementing this, which is a shame - since it is apparently almost no work to do.

He probably means Gingerbread - and yes some apps are not Gingerbread compatible as I have done the same with my HTC HD2.

Sorry, yes, Gingerbread which by the way, is just 2.3. I downloaded and installed the Os following XDA site instructions. (thanks captkjaneway). There are tons of modified ROMs for HTC phones there. Mine is running Windows and Android Froyo as dual boot.

This is like installing Vista on your computer after having Windows XP. Usually most drivers and applications (at the point of the release) have been written for XP. Attempting to run or install something new just makes your device not usable, not in terms of applications and added functionality via extra software. Because is so new, it is difficult to find new drivers and new applications.

I never install a fresh or brand new Os on anything just after came out to market. In real life, big companies like the one I work for, we take the "wait" approach. It allows the new Os or software to settle down and developers to create new apps.

Simply untrue. Using autonooter and following 8 steps is all it takes. I had my NC rooted in under 15 minutes and much of it was automated.

To the OP, jocampo's expected and redundant NC dislike notwithstanding, the NOOKColor is an incredible device and the price can't be beat for what you get. I highly suggest you check it out.

I agree, I am not too worried about rooting. I would most definitely root a NC if I bought one as I rooted by classic Nook the instant I got it home. I have read through the instructions for both the first root and the autonooter as soon as they were available. I think I would wait to see what the NC does first on it's own though.

Even if you believe rooting is easy for you and even a fast process, the reality is that involves some technical Linux commands that most users are not accustomed to. Some of those just follow the instructions without knowing the meaning of those commands or what they are doing.

I am not judging your technical abilities here but would not be exact saying is a transparent process for all users.

There is an autonooter out now that basically does it for you. The hardest part of the process is writing the sd card. And if you mess up you can just do a reset. I admit, there are some people that probably would get frazzled by the steps, but I think a lot of people can do it if they read through the instructions a few times. I do have friends that won't even consider rooting something though, so if they need their Nook rooted or something done to their phones, I have to do it for them. I am not very techie myself, but if I want something I can usually figure out a way to do it.

Care,

At the end and based on that you're the OP, if you were going to compare Nook Color vs Galaxy Tab, last one is better piece of hardware and unleashed out of the box, even after rooting the Nook Color. GT Has a faster processor, more RAM, etc.

If price is a big obstacle for you (it looks it is) your better and only alternative right now on the market for a capacitive tablet running Android is the Nook Color. Out of the box (no rooting) will not provide Android Market access and the browser won't be as good as the Galaxy Tab, but I believe taking the hacking step is totally yours.
