				Brand new kindle came charged?

Hi, I recently got mine from amazon.com. It came more than %60 charged. Why? A friend said it could be because amazon sold it to someone else before. Than that someone didn't liked and returned to device to amazon, and amazon sold it to me later.

No. They always come with a partial charge. If you leave a Lithium battery at 0% for extended periods of time then it starts to permanently damage the battery.

Your friend does not know very much about lithium ion batteries. They always come partially charged; it damages the battery to completely discharge it.

My super pro-pro pro pro dell came 100% charged, battery inserted. You know they are a company that means business when they do that. ... But still, dell is a good company, they gave me a brand new laptop for free with 2x the specs because my old one had a problem with the hard drive and they didn't want to send a tech out to repair it (even though I told them I could replace it myself if they mailed the parts beforehand) - Now that's customer service. |

I think most electronics come partially charged. Mine was 50% charged when it arrived.

Lipo batteries should come 50% charged for storage, that way they don't degrade as much in storage. Fully charged batteries suffer capacity loss by a decent percentage every year. Allowing a battery to be stored at a low percentage is also bad... That's why it's kind of a bad thing when you notice that you get a device with a battery at 0% or 100%. If it's at 0% it usually means that something is defective and the battery was able to discharge. If the battery is at 100%, it means that you probably got a recently RMA/refurbished item, or they did some testing or updates prior to shipping - that was the case of my laptop. In many of these devices with integrated batteries, they may just update the firmware and do diagnostic tests which take 1-2 hours allowing the device to charge (most of these tests require a power supply anyway, specifically firmware updates). Anyways, most companies don't worry about it because they realize that the device will be used by the consumer after it is shipped, not sitting in a warehouse for months to a year, so no harm is done with a full battery. |

My Kindle 3 came partially charged -- I think it's really quite normal! Otherwise I might have been given a second-hand e-reader, and that's not something I want to think |

Actually, the battery being charged is perfectly normal. What surprised me was that the wireless was also on. Given the little kindle had flown across the USA and into Australia and then interstate, that probably kills the theory about wireless signals and plane security.

I think the wireless does default to on when you do actually start it for the first time though. | |

So the screen picture you see when you open the box, showing you how to attach the kindle to a laptop isn't a screensaver as such but a screen that shows, for the only time, when the kindle is off?

Yup. Its put up on the screen just before it turns itself off as eInk doesn't need any power to stay in the same state.

Have you ever purchased a cell phone or a smart phone? They come the same way. This is normal all electronics come with a partial charge on them so that you can configure the item and get it running. The second t hing you will need to do is to completely charge the reader.
