It's a tie

It's a toss up between King's The Shining and Harris' Red Dragon. Both were equally frightening in their own way.

I hope you like it! I don't know how much the book differs from the film, I expect the book to be more graphic & violent.
Remember to read it in a nice, lit room without dark corners or strange noises...

Whispers, by Dean Koontz. I had just moved into my first apartment, and in one scene in the book, she opens her door to her attacker. I had a hard time leaving in the morning!

When the movie came out, the rumor was that the devil was in the theater. So I insisted on seeing it at the drive in. I figured I could keep the doors locked.

To me, the scariest books are the ones that can actually happen (no, I don't believe in evil clowns hiding in the sewers). That is why Whispers was so scary - it could easily happen.

One of my favorites is Swan Song by Robert McCammon. It's the one post apocalyptic story I'll pick over King's The Stand.

I forgot about the scene in Red Dragon where Harris describes very clearly and graphically (I think it was Harris and not my imagination) the guy being eaten alive by the pig, that really made the pucker factor rise.

Thanks LivelyWriter for reminding me, I'll have to buy that one as an ebook.

A different kind of scary, but really the scariest book I ever read - The Smartest Guys in the Room about the Enron implosion.

I never found supernatural evil nearly as frightening as what ordinary people can be capable of.

The Amityville Horror, because I was about 12 years old when I read it, and also happened to be at home alone.

Yes... When I said 'fantasy', I meant 'things that can't happen' - vampires, zombies etc..

The only book that scared me was "The Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris. Many years ago before "Silence of the Lambs" I was staying at my parents place(in my brothers ex-room because my ex-room had been converted to office) and there was a storm outside, windows with no screens, moving trees outside etc!

I am still scared! Now looking up details for movie of the book "Manhunter (1986)" with Brian Cox. I might have to find the DVD of this one.

The Ignored by Bentley Little. Most of his books are downright creepy but that one sticks with me.

I loved Swan Song. It's one of the books that made me a Robert McCammon fan.

Not sure if I'd say it scared me - to me it was more like an apocalyptic fantasy, but I definitely loved reading it.
