I managed to properly twist my ankle today.
At the back of the store, right in front of the rack where we keep the more special lightbulb high up, there is a spot in the floor that has been damaged for as long as I can remember. Over the years the spot has grown bigger and deeper (about 2-3cm now). I know the spot is there but I regularly twist my ankle when I step in it or on the edge, especially when I get off the ladder/steps my foot seems to gravitate towards the hole.

Usually it just hurts a bit for a short time but today I stepped on the edge and twisted my ankle hard and heard/felt a crunch. It was busy which was good because as long as I keep moving it doesn't hurt much, but it's also bad because I didn't have time to cool it. My father thought I was exaggerated when I told him it hurt, I showed him after we closed and he was very impressed by how much it was swolen and how purple it was.

I just hope that I can go to the Amsterdam Hermitage with my sister on Monday, I was really looking forward to the day out.

you need to elevate and ice it right away. I broke my ankle on a Search and Rescue Mission, had to go another 5 miles before I could get off of it. it never healed correctly and still is slightly enlarged

Ouch, that stinks.

RICE. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. You want to ice it in cycles, 10-20 minutes on, 60 minutes off. Keep it wrapped if you have to walk on it, but stay off it as much as possible.

As in Japan (?) it's part of our driving instruction to apply it whenever one is stopped ....
On my las driving test, the examiner had me stop on a hill. Then he said "There's a Mercedes stopped an inch behind you, start going without rolling back and hitting it."

Since I was driving a manual transmission Mazda, I pulled the hand brake (parking brake or emergency brake, your choice), slipped the clutch, and rolled off without rolling back the imaginary inch. He just nodded and raised his eyebrows. I passed!

So; they're good for something after all! But I've never been able to figure out what those ones than many American cars have; the ones with the fourth (third for automatic transmissions) pedal on the left (right for Brits, Aussies, and Japanese) side are good for. After all, I only have two feet; can't very well manipulate the accelerator, clutch, and parking brake at the same time!

Now, If I was the Librarian, it would be different.

M last car (automatic Audi A6) had a great "hand brake". It was a switch on the centre console that you pulled up with a finger to set the brake on. It came off automatically when you put your foot on the accelerator pedal. So easy to use!

Yes, you can, and it doesn't involve the parking/emergency brake.

Professional drivers and car engineers/designers use something called heel-toe shifting. One foot (the left, here in the States) operates the clutch, the other operates both the brake and accelerator: the ball of your foot is on the brake and you rock the edge of that same foot over to goose the throttle at the same time. This technique is primarily used in performance driving/racing wherein you have to match revs when downshifting so the car doesn't lurch all over the place--a bad thing to happen if you're in a turn, moreso if the weather's bad. Many car magazines will extol the virtues of a car that has good pedal placement to facilitate this technique.

Most automotive journalists will admit it's inaccurately-named, but if you can pull it off successfully while in the company of a professional they will be suitably impressed.

Download "Soundhound" on your phone. I bought the paid version because I use it so much. Not only lyrics, but youtube videos, places you can buy it, etc. It can also identify a song when you hear it in a store, or even hum or sing it. It's a fantastic app.

But I agree. If I buy an album I'd like to have the lyrics at my fingertips.

Thanks Betty. I'll check it out. I can usually find the lyrics, but in this case I was very interested in who was playing what and singing backup etc.

I just bought California by The Coyote Problem thanks to that amazing song VR posted "Martin King and Coretta" https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...postcount=5486 (today is MLK's birthday) and I'm listening to the album and wanting to know more about the song production.

Yes, but then I was un-extolling the un-virtues of the pedal style parking/emergency brakes, which make such gyrations necessary!

So here's my rant; automotive engineers who should know better!

I didn't know about the icing in cycles, will try that. I regularly twist my ankle so taping/bandaging is almost second nature by now. About a year ago I got MBT shoes and when I twisted my ankle this summer I found out the rounded sole made walking a lot less painful. Most painful is walking down the stairs. Bending downwards is nearly impossible so I first have to put my hurt foot on the next step, then my good foot, then to the next step with my hurt foot, etc. This sucks since our house seems to be made up out of stairs (24 including several 3/4 step stairs).

Got a good excuse to take it easy in the store next week, it's still incredibly busy and I hadn't have enough time for my usual January/start of the month chores so I might get those finally done.

I had a friend who fell through her attic roof onto her cement garage floor a few years ago, crushing her ankle. Something she learned in therapy and passed on to me has stuck with me -- "Good leg to heaven, bad leg to hell." Going up the stairs, lead with the good leg and let the injured one follow. Going down the stairs, lead with the injured leg and let the good one follow. It works because it keeps you from having to put weight on your leg as it is bent, which means it also works in a cast!

The icing in cycles is supposed to help keep from damaging tissues with the ice, something I picked up back when I was badly spraining by ankle half a dozen times or more a year. That and to keep wrapping it for at least a week after I think it's healed.

3 am prank call from a restricted number. Probably just some kid, but boy it got me steamed. I do not like trying to engage brain cells at that hour, or having the s. other get woken up when he has work.
