We spent the afternoon wandering around the grounds of Osaka Castle, then went to a small import shop to look for tea. I found two new teas to try; Ahmad's 'English #1,' and Fortunum & Mason's 'Ceylon Orange Pekoe.'
Fortnum & Mason's 'Royal Blend' and 'English Breakfast tea' have long been favorites of mine and are both blended with Ceylon, but I never had the opportunity to taste their Ceylon tea by itself. But I'll save that for latter. Right now I tasting Ahmad's English #1 and I must say... I'm impressed. It's a strong tea that really explodes on the tongue but in no way bitter. Just a lot of tea flavor with a hint of smoke in the after taste. Verrrry nice... Ahmad's is a London tea house that has been doing most of its importing to the middle east, and only lately opened up in Japan. I tried another of their teas before and wasn't particularly thrilled with it. This one is different. I can understand why it's one of Iran's top choices. Ahmad also sell a lot of tea to, of all places, Russia, where it is the second largest importer of tea! So we have a really tasty tea from a reputable tea house, comes in a nice octagonal tight tin, and .... best of all... it's dirt cheap! Almost half the cost of most other black teas on the shelf. Nice combination! Stitchawl |

Sugar in tea...
When I was a child we always ate our Sunday evening meal at the local Chinese restaurant. Chinese restaurants in those days always served jasmine tea in steaming pots, and gave each guess a very small thick-walled tea cup to use. I could never figure out why these cups were so tiny! ![]() I loved the tea, but I think it was because of the sugar that I was allowed to add to it. I would put in three large spoonfuls of sugar into each cup. I think I must have been drinking tea-flavored syrup! ![]() Somewhere along the way I managed to wean myself off the use of sugar in my tea. The only time I drink sweet teas now are in India or the Middle East and they get served to me without my asking. I enjoy them in situ but not at home. What about you? Sugar? Milk? Lemon? Ouzo? ![]() This is one of the two teas that quite successfully diverted me to the True Path of loose tea ![]() ![]() ![]() Quote:
Although, as you correctly noticed it is a London tea house, you cannot buy Ahmad tea in standard shops here. Only in souvenir shops for tourists or duty-free. Surprised? I have bought Ahmad tea one time, some 5 years ago...but I was worse than n00b back then. I will have to repeat it one day. Quote:
![]() To be honest, I am proud of myself that I managed to give up on sugar in tea. It was a war. The whole process from the day I started it to the day when I could drink a cup of tea and not to shudder in revulsion but enjoy it (even though tea bags) took 18 months at the very least. Milk was never ever a part of my tea drinking, except a few time when I had a cold and my throat demanded something smoother than raw tea. Lemon in tea was a luxury in xUSSR that was adored by everyone besides me, which was usual wierdo me ![]() ![]() No regrets whatsoever. Straight tea is me me me! Right now....Saturday morning, Assam STGFOP1 S Harmutty....delicious ![]() Last edited by astra; 01-15-2011 at 06:13 AM. |
