![]() I am not a big flavored tea drinker. I prefer straight and strong. Which may be why I like the English Breakfast tea. Thank you for that. I will check the offerings with that in mind. ![]() |

Consider yourself lucky. You are just beginning your exploration and have an almost unlimited arena ahead of you. I've been at it since I was a teenager ( a year or two ago) and now have confined my search to black teas with the occasional dip into obscure oolongs. I get served green teas every day here in restaurants with meals and find them wanting. Even the finest powdered matcha (and all matcha is powdered by definition but not all matcha is good...) doesn't move me the way a good rich black tea does. Unfortunately, Starbucks only sells Tazo teas and I only enjoy (to a limited degree) it's English Breakfast tea, and find it much more enjoyable iced rather than hot. Today I'll make a run downtown to pick up another tin of Taylor's of Harrogate's English Breakfast tea, and see if there is some other brand on the shelves today that perhaps I haven't tried yet. Often limits make life easier... ![]() Stitchawl |

... and now... a second cup of Jackson's of Piccadilly's English Breafast tea. It's the last of the stash, and I haven't been able to replenish it. There are mixed reviews about Jackson's and they may be having difficulties as a company, but I enjoy their English Breakfast tea as well as their Assam. Jackson's lays claim to inventing 'Earl Grey' tea but so do a couple of tea houses...

Just got my TG black sampler: Assam Marangi, China Golden Yunnan, Ceylon Pekoe Uva Highlands, Darjeeling Steinthal, Nepal Mai Ilam, and English Breakfast Tea. Oh - and also some Rooibush Amarettini.
Hmmmm .... the Rooibush Amarettini is calling me. |

Sounds yummy. I like the Assam and would probably like the Darjeeling although I have not had that specific one.

I find Assam to be one of the richest of all the black teas, without being too strong, followed closely by China Black. That China Golden Yunnan you received might be right in the same ballpark. The Keemun teas tend to be very very rich but also very very strong, which is why they so often get used as part of a blend, though I like 'em straight. Most folks seem to prefer Ceylon teas as they are so very smooth and easy in the mouth, and make up the bulk of the blended tea constitutions, as well as the 'usual' stuff found in supermarket tea bags and restaurant tea bulk sales. Supermarket teas such as Lipton's, Bigelow, Red Rose, Dai Pai Dong, Brook Bond, Tetley, etc., tend to be blends of Ceylon teas, blended to give a 'consistent' taste, rather than a distinctive taste. That said, some of them can be very, very good tasting teas, especially if you can find them in loose leaf form rather than already bagged. Brook Bond does most of its business selling in bulk to restaurants and hotels, and makes a really nice cup of Ceylon tea that can be enjoyed any time of day. You might have gotten yourself a really wonderful selection of teas in that sampler of yours! ![]() Stitchawl |
