About your desired features: -You don't need a text editor to read a book. Instead, able to save notes -Samba? for what! Actually, that opens the door for viruses (Windows side) -External monitor? you serious? I see no reason for that either. -Chat? When you were reading a normal on a pbook, did you have a netbook handy and you were chatting all the time? This is just a distraction -Customized welcome screen? same that chat... another distraction I understand that people want and desire more stuff on their devices but we should keep in mind that an ereader is that, an ereader. Asking for more will simple alter the main purpose of the device and convert it on a tablet or netbook. Weight, size, price, etc, will increase considerably after those additions and then majority of people won't buy the device. To me, it looks like you are looking or need a tablet. On your particular case maybe a Nook Color or Pocketbook IQ would be better. |

Unfortunately threads like this go down the drain pretty fast, but the main point should remain - modern devices are firmware/software updatable, and a lot/most customers expect it, especially the younger generation that uses smartphones, netbooks, etc. Please do show me one popular device that has received no updates.

By your logic, nobody should buy Kindle 3, because there have been issues reported with it. Instead everybody should wait for 3.0.FINAL and then evaluate. That makes no sense to me - you expect a new product to have some growing pains, and expect that it will be fixed. It is 21st Century, and everything runs on flash memory. Since Kindle DXG came out close to Kindle 3, it looks like a bigger version of Kindle 3, and it MAKES SENSE for it to have same/better PDF support than Kindle 3, people will expect Amazon to spend the effort and update it. Up to this point, Amazon has been responsive and took care of their Kindle customers well. My investment in DXG was partially motivated by the fact that Amazon stands behind their products. That's why this is so disappointing to me and a lot of other customers. |

Again samba client would allow you to remotely open and edit files on your network (like when I'm working with code/shell scripts). This would in no way "open the door for viruses." If you don't know what a program/service is/does, don't comment on it. Note that I didn't mention SMB server/samba suite. As far as using the device as an external monitor.. Why the hell not? They sell plenty of USB only monitors. The I-pod line has been able to be used as a monitor through simple tweaking over USB. The DX has the same screen size as many popular netbooks, so using it as another display would be very useful in some situations. |

I bought my KindleDX for what it would do and not for what it might to at some future date with a firmware update from Amazon. And, it still does what I bought it to do. |

Fixing bugs is one thing; adding features, another. I expect the first but only hope for (and don't make purchasing decisions based upon) the second.

If you want samba, being able to plug a monitor, this, that, get a tablet my friend or a neetbook. Your idea of a perfect ereader is the similar to the one giving by people who want a multipurpose cellphone/camera, one device for everything. You do not see professional people taking pictures with a cellphone, do you? A device which does a lot of things or try to do a lot of things, will not do something good but everything in an average way. Last edited by jocampo; 01-13-2011 at 05:48 PM. |

This isn't the 1980s where we walk around with brick sat phones, we use multipurpose devices. My cellphone has a notepad/calendar/stopwatch/mp3player/camera/video recorder/webbrowser/ereader.. and it also works as a phone, yet I use all of these features when it is convenient for me, and it does everything well enough. I don't need to "make calls like a superstar," I just need to get done what I want to do, and more functionality is better. These features are all software additions to the phone, and not required for its operation, same thing with the e-reader, it's just a matter of implementing them. If you want to stick your head in the ground and live in the dark, I won't stop you, but the 80's... <<<< way |

Wow, so I chime in after a few month's hiatus only to see the "promised K3 to KDX update is coming" discussion still continues.

Sheesh AMZN, cut the DX owners some slack and give them webkit and better pdf support already! This reeks of a crappy software company...not something I would associate with Amazon...really a shame, IMO. |
