With a little//////lot of luck you may be able to save the CPU, too. Many modern chips have thermal shut-offs... Can you replace the fan?
Wait a sec! What broke? Fans don't normally fall off; their bearings fail. Mind you, I do my own work and I don't pay myself for my labour

Agh! I just opened a can of Rickard's Dark beer, hoping it would have more flavour than Rickard's Red. I think it has as much flavour as Coor's Light!

I'd rather have cold water!

Tomorrow I'll go get some Hobgoblin.

I hope this doesn't belong in the P&R forum, 'cause I'll never see it again...

I'd like to know how that was possible. CPU fan assemblies in most systems are rather carefully designed to not fall off, unless they haven't been properly attached to begin with. On the motherboard on my desktop, there's a socket the CPU plugs into, with a latch to lock it in, then the fan assembly covers it, with expanding posts that fit through holes in the motherboard and expand to lock once fully inserted. (Of course, they have to be fully inserted, which can be a pain to do.)

The prior motherboard I used had temperature sensors on the mobo, and if the CPU overheated, the entire machine would be halted to preserve it. I found out about that feature when mine did: enough dust and cat hair had accumulated inside the case to jam the fan and stop it from rotating. It was nothing can of canned air couldn't cure, but it was the first time I'd had to.

Meanwhile, the CPU overheating shouldn't zap your hard drive. Worst case, you might need to run CHKDSK as a precaution to repair any file system damage caused by an improper shutdown. Your CPU might even be okay, once the fan assembly is properly re-attached or replaced.

We are pulling a fan off an old motherboard to replace it. I am not sure, but I think the CPU will be OK.

The plastic assembly holding the fan to the CPU must have broken. I just went out to take a photo, but bloke has taken the housing away to find a replacement. The photo attached shows the naked CPU. The box is usually standing up, so when the housing broke, the fan fell over.

We have never had this happen before, the side is permanently off the computer, so not too much dust and cat fur can accumulate.

Fingers crossed everything will survive.

sod it with computers. the relatively new laptop that replaced the badly repaired one for my daughter has developed a wobble! All the feet are in place, but the case has a warp in it ...

Send it back. Either the case always had a warp, in which case it's a manufacturing fault, or it has developed a warp (possibly from heat?) in which case it's a design fault.

Either way, you don't want to keep it until it fails just outside warranty!

Annoying thing is this is a replacement within a warranty period which extends to 2013 - and the hassle I had trying to get the first one sorted....(They replaced m/b 3*, optical disc 2* and heat sink)...and I can't email the technical support directly [it seems I need to do it from the laptop - which is a few hundred miles from me....].

I think you'll like Hobgoblin. When I worked near Staines (in the UK) I used to go to a Wychwood Brewery pub there regularly. It's good stuff.

Assuming it's the same over there, of course.
