I've decided to move into the Rant area, because I am so SO SO frustrated with this !!@@!@! ice! My friend finally got her mother safely to the dialysis center, but the road back (a major interstate!) is completely gridlocked with yet another pileup caused by tractor-trailer trucks jackknifing. Correction: BOTH roads back are blocked. They'll be there for a couple of hours anyway for the treatment, so she's going to call me when they're done and I'm going to check the traffic cams and try and find a route for them to get home.

I just went out to try and drive over to my mom's house, but no cars are making it on my street at all. It's solid ice. I can't even walk over there today, because, again, solid ice. You can't even stomp and crack it.

Pi, pi, pi, pi, pi!!!!

If you don't have ice crampons for your shoes, look around the house for something hard & rough (or with a point) you could attach to the bottom of your boot soles - to dig into the ice - you only need something under the ball of your foot - to give you some stability. Like putting chains on tires.

Also - kitty litter thrown on top of ice will give you traction too.

Betty - bungee cords - if you have any - or can get any - wrap your boot with them so that the metal hooks are on the sole - and can dig into the ice when you walk.

O my, I feel sorry for you and your friend. What people over here sometimes do for their shoes to get a grip on ice, is to put rough knitted socks over their shoes. I say with you: PI PI and PI.

That sucks. I second the kitter litter idea. When I was pregnant I couldn't shovel the walkway and used kitty litter right down the driveway to the car so I could get to the docs. It works really well if you're desperate enough.

It also absorbs oil, so you can leave it on the driveway after everything thaws and get 2 for 1.

Okay, I've calmed down a little bit. Thanks everybody for the good thoughts. I waited a couple of hours and tried again. I managed to get to the car without killing myself, and drove over to mom's house. Some streets actually have dry areas on them now, from the wind, but some are still completely white. Mom's street is that way. I made it there, though, but was afraid to stop in front of her house because it was that thick clear kind of ice and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get off of it if I parked there. Her driveway is a steep hill, also ice covered. Anyway, there was a spot a couple of houses down where someone had been parked during the storm so it was kind of clear. I pulled over, opened the door, and...could not walk. I was like Bambi on the frozen pond.

I had a walking stick with me to give me balance, but it wouldn't punch thru the ice so it did me no good. Just then I heard a roaring noise, and I looked up to see a bulldozer heading straight for me, scraping the street as he came. He obviously saw my panic, and just stopped and waited for me to skate my way around the car to the curb. I tried to pick my way back toward mom's house but by that time I was so over it (again!). I got back in my car and followed the path of the bulldozer back to the main road, and then came home. I've satisfied myself that in an emergency I could get to her, or out of here, but this isn't an emergency so I'm back home. And luckily not flattened by a bulldozer.

Now I'm going to shop at Amazon for some yaktrax. It won't do me any good this time, but next time...
