Just to be sure, if i convert a file from ePub to Kindle or vice versa, i shouldn't have the same image problems i see with converted mobi files unless it was an image to start with?

Usually not. But it depends on what's in the ePub and how well the conversion is done. Calibre does a pretty good job.

Umm... Kindle files are mobi files, pretty much. Did you mean converted from PDF? That is often a nasty mess.

I have a dumb question.
When I set up whatever it is to strip the DRM from a book do I have to reset (redo) it for every book that I buy that is DRM'd, or is it a one shot program. I follow the instructions and then whenever I buy a book that has DRM it is removed automatically.

I bought three books, an epub and two that were adobe. I got the message that I need to do the .ascm (?) I think I have that right. To do that, I figure I am going I need to have the ADE downloaded (I have a Sony 900). I don't have the Sony ADE installed, I deleted it when I installed Calibre.

I am computer dumb, it is totally GREEK to me, I get lost with all of these terms, so, say it as if you are speaking to an idiot, because that is what I am about computers, sadly.

Thanks for any help that can be given.

If you are purchasing books but not use the Sony software, you will need to at least have Adobe Digital Editions installed. When you download the .acsm (this is actually a license to download the real file), there should be an option to open the file and it will either default to ADE or ask you which program you wish to open it with (choose ADE). The resulting open file will be either ePub or PDF, and this ePub or PDF will automatically be saved to your computer. See my signature for help in finding where the files are saved on your computer.

Thanks Grooks,

If I download the ADE doesn't that interferr with my being able to use Calibre? And if I have Calibre I thought that I couldn't download DRM'd books.

That is where I am confused.

I prefer Calibre and if I can't use it with DRM'd books, then I need to strip the DRM.

I guess the second part is, do I have to strip the DRM from each book individually, or once you do the reprograming, or whatever, you don't have to do that any more when you buy books that are DRM.

Thanks again for the info

Neither ADE nor calibre interfere with each other provided you don't run them simultaneously... having both on your computer isn't a problem...

It can be done in batches - very quick procedure.

With Amazon and B&N you don't need to use an app on your PC to download ebooks (although K4PC is often a good way to get Kindle ebooks), but with Adobe ePubs and PDFs you have to use Desktop Adobe Digital Editions to download the actual ebook (in some cases the Sony eBook Library app work in place of ADE). Once a DRM-ridden ebook is on your PC, the act of importing it into Calibre will strip its DRM - providing you have the 3rd party DRM-stripping plugins installed. Some plugins need a one time setup step, but after that they are all hands off.

Even running them together is not an issue.

Don't know about B&N, but with Amazon you have to either have a Kindle or the K4PC app. They don't give you another option (at least that I could find) for just downloading the ebook file without something installed on your PC. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope so, because I really dislike having to install software that is --in my opinion-- unnecessary, which for a Sony reader, K4PC is just that.

To the OP, just a note about your size comparison to the Kindles in your 2nd post, sometimes the case is bigger but only because of needing a keyboard. e.g. the 6" 'Pearl' generation screens are not just similar, they are identical (even bought from the same supplier!). To me, the smaller overall size of a PRS-650 (and touch interface) is worth a premium over the equivalent 6" Kindles.
