good to hear everyone is OK so far.
@lene1949 hope the flood keeps away from your door.

@iq6000 that has gotta suck. As a regular traveller between Darwin and Brisbane, going via Adelaide would be a serious pain. I would not go. Being struck by lighting in the plane wouldn't be so bad

I think the Navy will have to mount a very convincing argument to get him up there again. At least guarantee him some sea time!

Oh, wow! I am so far behind in keeping up with some threads. I thought I would just post my little gripe about the damp cold, but after reading about everyone's weather, I feel lucky it's only the damp cold here.

@Betty, what a very nice thing to do for your mom. I hope she is feeling better now.

@lene1949, I'm glad you got your boots. Did your son and his family have to evacuate? How are you all doing?

@SneakySnake, are your parents OK?

@Marc, I'm glad it sounds like everyone is fine. Mum is there for a nice visit, huh? .... hugs.

@Katti's Cat, thanks for checking in. I'm glad you and MOTH are doing OK.

@iq6000, how lucky to meet such lovely people willing to help and so great for your daughter to be offered a place to stay. I hope your husband made it home, OK.

@nohmi2, CazMar, wannabee (I hope I didn't forget anyone) stay safe and dry.

The SES bloke even moved a couple of snakes inside the roof to get to it. SES people are emergency-angels). But, as said, they're fine. My brother lives in Brisbane, and I'm not sure how he's going about getting home, but he's up high too - only getting home might be a bother, as there are a few creeks around there.

Mum's still here, as driving 4.5 hours from the Sunny Coast to northern NSW, which would take her through some of the worst of it, was obviously not a good idea. She might be here a few days yet.

It's raining, a lot. But we've had a couple of very minor leaks (pretty much expected), a full pool, and a little bit of stir-crazy as a consequence. Or, relatively speaking, none.

Cheers,
Marc

Tried to drive the car out this morning, up an incline with a corner near the top - failed to get any grip on the ice that has formed....previous traffic compressed a small amount of snow cover then was rained on in the night followed by a freeze afterwards.
Took the dog out for a walk and she slipped and looked confused.
Decided to walk back home leaving the car at a neighbours ....

Otherwise it is sunny with a chill wind, but I doubt the ice is going to melt any time soon ....

Yes, I agree. And for all non-Australians:
please take care when walking a dog/ driving a car/ get a mother her coughsyrup in icy/slippery weather. I worry a lot and tend to have an overdrive on imagination reading those posts.

Woke up this morning to a solid sheet of ice - on everything! Fortunately a thin sheet of ice - so power is on - but I will be working (errr...yeah, sure) from home most likely today - the snow plows can't get their blades under the ice so are just compressing it into the road surfaces. Only getting into the high 20's F today - so no melting expected.

All you Oz-ians -- stay safe and keep checking in so we know you're OK!

So the ice made it up there? It won't go away, then. Just five minutes ago our local weather guy said, "What is on the roads stays on the roads because it is staying cold all week." I think this arctic front will spread your way if it ever gets through with us.

Yup - we're going to have freezing drizzle today, and temps not over 30 F the rest of the week. I think our DOT is praying for the sun to come out to initiate melting - the brine, salt, etc. ain't working.

We're in the council's "land slip risk" area (just - our house is the last one in it downhill on our street), but it's not something I've really considered a risk for us in this. The road's developed a few more "stretch mark" cracks, but nothing that looks much more than cosmetic. We had a fair whack of rain, about 170mm/6.7" since 9am with about half of that coming between 4pm and 6pm this afternoon.

Brisbane and Ipswich flood levels won't peak until, I think, Thursday, even though the rain has eased off. They're still confirming more dead, and increasing the numbers of people missing. It's been pretty full-on just watching on the telly, so those who are or know people in the relevant zones (see some of the posts above) must be a bit anxious.

I've heard it said that 75% of Queensland has been declared a Disaster Area, so by my calculations that's about 1.3 million km2 or 500,000 square miles (I'll let everyone else do their relevant, local comparisons). Of course, population density is lower than a lot of places too, but it's still a pretty big area.

Anyway, again, for me...no real effect other than a mother staying longer than expected (only a problem in my own, self-indulgent, little mind ). The effect on others is pretty large and broad...an enormity I don't think we're going to grasp for at least a small while yet.

Cheers,
Marc

They have been using the liquid -- magnesium chloride around here the last few years.....it eats cars and makes the road look like black ice!
