We're up a hill, and coastal, so nowhere near any flooding. My sister is cut off in Cooran, but also on higher ground (though yesterday, before it got bad, the SES came out to patch a "water-pouring-in" leak in the roof. The SES bloke even moved a couple of snakes inside the roof to get to it. SES people are emergency-angels). But, as said, they're fine. My brother lives in Brisbane, and I'm not sure how he's going about getting home, but he's up high too - only getting home might be a bother, as there are a few creeks around there.
Mum's still here, as driving 4.5 hours from the Sunny Coast to northern NSW, which would take her through some of the worst of it, was obviously not a good idea. ![]() It's raining, a lot. But we've had a couple of very minor leaks (pretty much expected), a full pool, and a little bit of stir-crazy as a consequence. Or, relatively speaking, none. Cheers, Marc Last edited by montsnmags; 01-11-2011 at 01:58 AM. |

No news as yet... In fact I can't get in touch with them anymore.. Either the phone lines are down or they're on their way out.
Last time I spoke to them - before lunch - they were OK... They live in a double story house, and when the water started rising into the kids' bedrooms at 5 this morning, they pulled the kids out of their beds, and took them upstairs, where the kitchen and dining room is. Unfortunately there are many people, who refuse to evacuate, because they think they're safe... I know there was a helicopter on stand-by... but my philosophy is: No news, good news... I had to go and get some milk, and I went to Redbank Plaza (large 3 story shopping centre).. Only 1 shop open on the top floor (K-Mart, where I got a pair of gum boots), none on the second floor and 2 on the bottom floor... |

So pleased you checked in Lene.
Do you know, I should also get some gum-boots. I'll have a look in Robina's K-Mart the next time that I am there. Keep well, and I hope that everything is fine. Cheers |

MOTH and I are doing fine - so far no floods near. Watching in horror reports from Toowoomba and the small places around it. Anyone in QLD - hope you are safe.
PS looking for gum boots too - hip high would be good |

Is OK at my place - but it took me from 12.15 to 3pm to get home from work today. Looks like I will be working at the local office (just down the road from my house) tomorrow.
My daughter was at Uni. She relies on public transport (because it is ridulously difficult to get a drivers licence in this state) and our local bus company stopped running buses altogether. The railway station is 10km away (along farm roads and through industrial estates) from where we live. So unless I could contact her I was not sure what we could arrange. I was so worried about her and mobile phones were mostly just not working. Luckily my daughter's friend offered her a place to stay close to the uni. My daughter met this friend all of a week ago!! It might be a few days before she can get home. The university is going to be closed for the next 3 days. I had a different trip home. I got on a train and we were told it would terminate early (but after my station). Then part way along the journey we were told the train would terminate at the next station, because a floating object had hit a bridge, and sorry there would be no buses because the bus company was flooded in. But for passenger's comfort there is a major shopping centre across the road. Yay! Roads out of this particular town were cut. But how lucky am I? One of the team leaders from my workplace was in the same carriage as me (and I was not in my usual spot on the train either) and she bumped into somebody she knew, whose daughter was on her way in her 4WD (SUV to you foreigners). We caught the train back one station to avoid the road closures. These lovely people whose names I don't know gave me a lift to my railway station where my car was patiently waiting for me. I drove home along the usual route (tip-toeing along the ridgetops - only 2 creek crossings!) Fingers crossed! Success! Made it safely home, my beloved car is safely parked under the house. The creeks were high, but not over the roads. The drains are all working around the house, so there is little water under the house. My husband was due to fly home from Darwin today. His plane got hit by lightning on the way to Darwin - more darn weather! - and the airline advised him to fly home via Adelaide (Darwin to Brisbane is 2849 km, going via Adelaide increases the length of the trip to 4238km. The airline wasn't sure if the plane would be diverted and his flight cancelled, so he took their advice is now in Adelaide. I checked the airline website and his original flight was not cancelled - only delayed - and it is due to arrive in Brisbane before he even leaves Adelaide. So I am home all by myself - but at least it has stopped raining! If he does get to Brisbane tonight I hope his cab can get through to D Bay. Angela |
