				Physical book collections?

From reading various threads here, it sounds like a lot of people use their ereaders almost exclusively. I'm going to order my first reader in the next couple of days, but I don't plan to stop buying physical books, and I'm curious about how many other people use both.

I think my reader will be useful for three things: * To make reading more convenient when I'm going somewhere - it'll be nice not to carry a large physical book, or several books if I can't decide what to read. * To read free books that I would otherwise have to buy or check out from the library. * To get the occasional book instantly (though I'd probably only do this every couple months; normally I'm happy waiting for the library copy) I'll probably end up using my reader 90% of the time when I'm out, and maybe up to 50% of the time when I'm at home. In the past, if I really love a book, I usually try to get a hardcover copy (signed if possible), and I can't see that changing. And I'll still go to my library's book sales from time to time, since their fiction is 55 cents (cheaper than even the least expensive ebook) and they have a lot of books that aren't available digitally. |

I went through this phase after I purchased my first Kindle.

Then I entered the next phase "I'll only buy a physical book if there is no ebook available." Now I read 99% of the time on the Kindle. Once I got used to it - it took over my reading entirely. It is so convenient, easy, and addictive. |

As of right now, I plan to do most of my reading on my Kindle, except, in the cases where I've already started a series and have purchased more than one or two of the books; those I will continue purchasing in paperback.

I do, also, see myself purchasing a "hard" copy of an e-book if I am particularity fond of story. Last edited by Nyssa; 01-10-2011 at 02:10 AM. Reason: corrected odd grammar. |

I will probably read physical books that are not available for Kindle.

The problem is that I do not live in an English speaking country and am limited to getting books from a second hand store, which is always behind in terms of new publications. I do buy from Abebooks (love that site) but the shipping can be expensive and I have to wait for the book to arrive (usually 12-14 days). The Kindle gets the book immediately and this is one of the reasons I love it. |

I still read physical books because Vietnamese writers usually don't have their works online, and even if they do, the books don't often come out in good quality.

for English works, I'll read them on Kindle. |

there are some dead tree books that I will never get rid of, but me buying NEW dead tree books (especially fiction) is now at -0-. some resource and reference books I will always own in dead tree. I'm having a hard time converting myself to ecookbooks, similar issues to the aforementioned

I occasionally buy books from The Folio Society... Mostly history and reference. These books are such a good quality and look great on the shelves.

For entertainment, it's e-books. Last edited by lene1949; 01-10-2011 at 08:10 PM. Reason: Attached a pic of some of my Folio books |

If a book is available digitally, I'll read it digitally, even if I already own the physical book. Just yesterday I bought 2 hard back copies of a book that I read last year. I bought the epub version, the Audible version & now the hard back for my library and as a gift. Needless to say, when I like a book I am all for supporting it's author.

I'll start reading paper books again once our lounge is finished. I'll be surrounded by books there! Naturally, there's no end date planned for that...

I must admit that the sight of bookcases filled with print books is great. Seeing all the titles stacked and in rows creates a great ambiance as well as something to talk about and show off

Anyone deal with publishers that have still not gotten with the ebook phenomena as yet? I deal with Golden Library a division of Harlequine books which ahs not seen it fit to give Golden Library an ebook capabiltiy as yet. I am hopping that they will get the capability shortly.

Once I found out how much easier it is to read on my ereader (thank you adjustable font sizes) I stopped buying fiction, and I pretty much stopped going to the library. I still buy the occasional specialized book that isn't available as an ebook, but given the choice I always pick the ebook. That is assuming the publisher hasn't priced the ebook higher than the paperbook.

The only books I buy in paper still are cookbooks. There are a few of those I got from the library in ebook, but if I am buying to use at home, I prefer paper for those.

I still have some fiction (one shelf's worth) not available in ebook, but I do not buy fiction in paper anymore at all. As far as 'collector's item' type stuff, the only thing I have is three books my grandmother gave me that are sentimental favourites, and I have some special shadowbox frames for them so I can display them and protect them. I treat them more like an art object (it is my one big memento from Grandma) than like a book, so I am not sure that counts in your question
