Thanks for the reply Manichean!

I know just enough about this stuff to be a danger to myself and others, so excuse me if I misunderstand some of your comments.

On my desktop, yes. Both the ip address I obtained from the ipconfig command and the 'test server' ip address typed into a browser brings up my library on calibre.

No. I tried reaching the library on another (wireless) computer on my home network and that didn't work either.

Is the tablet in the same IP range as your computer is?
Yes, the tablet's IP address only differs in the last number in the set of four.

If you have a combined router/AP, then sometimes the WLAN devices are not allowed to talk to the wired LAN devices, which I'm assuming your computer to be, for security reasons. Is this the case on your network?
Yes, that is the case. Is there any work around?

In case there isn't an easy fix, I hooked up my tablet to my computer via a USB cable as is suggested in the calibre faq. When I mount the tablet I don't see a "send to device" button on calibre on my desktop. Could I have configured calibre incorrectly?

Your device is, as far as I can see in the FAQ, not supported directly by Calibre. Use the Save to disk- function.

As for the original server problem, if your router indeed blocks access to wired LAN devices from the WLAN, you need to refer to its documentation as to how you'd configure it to allow access.

Thanks for the help. I'll just save to disc as you suggested.

In addition to save-to-disk, you can use connect to folder (available by clicking the connect/share button). Connect to folder permits you to use any folder visible from your computer as a device. Plug in your device and 'connect' to an appropriate folder in its memory, and voila, the on-device flags will work and you can use send-to-device.

Question

Is there a way to only download tags when downloading metadata?

Edit: I found another solution (but am unable to delete this post).

I suspect the answer to this question is no, but I'll ask anyway. I know that I can get Calibre to put the metadata at the front of a book during conversion, a non-DRM book. Can I take an Amazon book I have purchased and put it thru the conversion in order to get the metadata in front of the book?

So far, it appears for any Amazon purchased book, if I want to in effect, read the cover blurbs and descriptions, I have to go online. If the metadata is there, I don't.

I am not asking to break the DRM, just to convert from Amazon format to Amazon format to put in the metadata.

DRM prevents conversion, if you want to convert, you have to remove the DRM.

I'm trying to remove all the tags from my ebook files. I can remove the tags from the database in Calibre but it doesn't actually remove the tags from the files, i.e. I still see the tags if I view information in the ebook viewer. Also if I save the file to disk and re-add it back to Calibre I get the tags back. Is there any way to remove the tags from the ebook files themselves?

I'm afraid not, when tags are updated in ebook files a merge, not an overwrite is performed.

Is that in part of the Calibre code, i.e. something that can be changed, or embedded in some library code somewhere?

Encoding input?

In Calibre, I converted pdf or epub to txt. On ebw1150, all looks good except for:

apostrophes are replaced with ?? Is there a simple code to input in the Options, 'character encoding' to fix this? I know Calibre does not directly support .imp output, but it works very nicely converting to .txt > then use ebookwise servers to download.

Calibre is one of the best conversion programs I have seen. Very nice!

what you're looking for is output encoding not input encoding. set the output encoding to cp1252 in the txt output options
