I get it.

Guys,

Thanks for your responses. After speaking to Amazon I now realize that my Kindle is utilizing my in-home wifi to connect directly.

It makes perfect sense. Too much coffee today...

Thanks,

David

It is why turning off wireless dramatically improves the battery life as it turns off the radios and also stops the checking and syncing.

Thanks. But I prefer to keep the wireless on 24/7, as I prefer the decreased battery time to having to remember to turn the wireless on. Any way, saving power would defeat my self image as I measure myself against other men by the size of my carbon foot print.

I always leave the wireless enabled on mine.

What is interesting to note is that the GSM data connection is always active and connected even if you're on WiFi. The only way to turn it off is to turn off wireless completely.

I have a question about this:

All of the examples I have seen so far have detailed people getting their documents *converted* and transferred to their Kindle.

So I've got a .mobi file. Already converted, ready to go, no conversion necessary, just a sideload. If I email that to kindle.com as opposed to free.kindle.com, and it ends up being delivered via 3G, am I charged? That seems to be a fuzzy question.

Yeah, it'll still be charged. The charge isn't for the conversion fee. It's for the whispersync delivery, which costs Amazon money through AT&T (or whatever wireless service provider)

Basically my understanding is, if you send something to yourname@free.kindle.com it will always be free and always delivered over wifi only.
If you send it to yourname@kindle.com it will be free over wifi but charged over 3g but it will always be delivered to you as long as your device is in range of a cell tower or wifi.

If you set your spending limit in Manage Your Kindle on Amazon to 0.00 then only the free.kindle.com is used and documents are delivered only over wifi.

If you have just the Kindle 3 wifi, then it doesn't matter which address you use, it will always be free.

Otherwise browsing over 3G and downloading from Amazon is free.

Hope this helps(?)

Cheers,

Andrew

a bit confused..

so if I have a Kindle 2, and I send something to username@free.kindle.com, does it get delivered over wifi or do I just get it attached to the email and have to transfer via USB?

The Kindle 2 doesn't have wifi, only cellular (3G). So if you use the free.kindle.com address, you'll receive the document as an email, and use the usb to copy it to the Kindle - just as you said.

So how long does it take? I sent files 10 minutes ago but so far, nothing has happened.

You have to add the e-mail address from where you have send content to Kindle on the Manage your kindle page at the Your Kindle Approved E-mail List section. If the e-mail address not in the list the mail will be ignored.

They finally came in. I guess their server was busy or something. I had already added my email address before I sent them so it was just a delay.
