A fluctuation of a pound or two is easily possible day-to-day.

But (if you can be relaxed about it) this is why daily measurement is good - you can more easily see the fluctuations and tell if there's a trend or not.

If you weigh yourself every day for a fortnight, and in the first three days you're 12 stone 0 +/-1 lb, and for the last three you're 11st 12 +/-1 lb, you can tell using daily weighing. But with just three weekly measurements, you can tell nothing. You could get any results between no change at all, or a loss of 4lb.

So I prefer to weigh myself every day (or nearly so).

Makes sense (at least after I converted all your measurements to kilogram ) ! Now that I'm back on a diet, I might try the daily weighing. I just have to make sure I don't become obsessed with my weight

I remember gaining some weight when I started dieting a couple of years ago, and although my dietitian had warned me about this I was completely devastated. So I just hope gaining weight one day and then losing it the next won't affect my mood too much.

Isn't it easier just not to weight yourself every day than spending your energy on convincing yourself, that the extra pound you just have noticed

I am proof of that this morning. Yesterday, I ate nothing but Slim Fast, sauteed veggies at the Chinese place, and green salad. BUT ..... I walked a quick mile at the gym, then did water aerobics for nearly 2 hours. I did tons of flutter kicks in the water for aerobic conditioning. I jogged back and forth across the pool until I was exhausted. We spent the whole day in the water.

Now this morning, my muscles are inflamed and swollen. I feel like the day after painting a house. My entire body is sore.

AND I GAINED 3 POUNDS!!!!!

You are correct.

Another thing to keep in mind is fluid (water) weight which will also fluctuate.

My body fluctuates in weight by 5 lbs given the time of day and after which one of my 5 meals I eat.

If you are going to use a scale to gauge weight loss I recommend only stepping on it once a week. I go by cloth measuring tape and big mirror. Make sure that you step on the scale the same time of day and wearing the same clothes (like in your undergarments). You will weigh slightly different at the end of the day than you do at the beginning.

Roughly 3500 calories equal one pound of body fat. Everybody has a certain amount of calories it takes to maintain their current weight. Through exercise or even simply diet 3500 calories out of your life over a period of a few days is a pound of fat lost. Consuming an extra 3500 calories or being less active and not burning what you normally would towards that amount will add a pound of fat.

Fruit and veggies can and will get you fat if you over eat them.

There can be 50-150 (roughly) calories per apple. I had buddies who would go the day and eat lots of fruit and veggies thinking that they were dieting.

They did lose a couple pounds but only because the fruit gave them the sh**s. Nothing that stuck.

It is very important to know what you eat.

For example (just for argument sake) if you eat meat 300kcal and bread 300kcal. You will get fat from the bread but much less from meat, although the raw quantity of calories looks the same. It depends on what the calories are made of. Your body will keep some and put some in places where you want them the least. So, your overall weight might be the same after both meals, the amount of fat will differ.
It also depends on how often you eat.
Our body is used from primordial times to save fat for cold periods. If you eat 2-3 times a day with bug time gaps, your body is entering a life saving mode when it thinks that food is hard to obtain, so let's put away those calories in the form of fat just in case. If you break your meals into smaller portions and consume them more often, the same amount of calories will be used more wisely by your body.
Even how you exercise will affect your fat and weight.
You might build muscles but still retain all the fat or you might burn fat and only strengthen the muscles.

You have to think about lots of things. It is not a straight forward formula 3000kcal in, 3300kcal out = loosing weight, loosing fat. If you do something incorrectly you might loose weight, but instead of loosing fat, you loose muscle mass.
