You can try to recover the usbstor.inf from your XP CD or download it somewhere from the net. Last edited by ppxnouse; 12-25-2007 at 07:24 PM. Reason: posted USB hotfix did not contain usbstor.inf |

If you have networked drives, try disconnecting all the network drives. Sometimes Windows wants to use a drive letter that a network drive is using. So once that is sorted, then device might show up.

I would test with another computer or if I did not have one available I would boot from a Knoppix DVD just to check that the Cybook is OK.

Have you tested the cable with another device so you know that the cable is OK?

I have gone down the list of all things in the device manager under usb and checked for new drivers. One driver was updated. It didn't help.
No networked drives. I would test it on another computer if I had one available, but I don't. It's a good idea and a fast way to see if it's the cybook or it's cable, or if it's something about my computer. I don't have anything else to test the cable on, the one for my camera isn't the same. What is a Knoppix DVD? (going to look that up now) To everyone, thanks for your ideas. I'm thinking the cybook is faulty, it's cable is faulty, or I need some driver or some special something that is lacking, although I don't know why it would be. The computer is a few years old, but as I said, it's just been reformatted with a fresh reinstallation of windows, and I have all the latest updates. I haven't tested every single driver on every single thing because it would take so long and I don't know what might be related other than usb drivers. I might start testing every driver anyway. Can't hurt to have updated drivers. |

Ok. Knoppix looks like it's over my head, and I can't download 700mb on dial-up, it'd take the rest of my life. I'm not buying anything else, I think I've already spent more than enough money on a product that doesn't work.
Bookeen needs to get back to me. Hopefully they can tell me how to fix this, and if not I'm going to expect a refund. Even with that, I'll be out shipping both ways. That will make me extremely sorry I ever tried to buy a cybook. I'm trying to be positive and believe they will be able to fix this without much more grief, and this will quickly become just an unpleasant memory. |

Knoppix is a whole other OS on dvd? It doesn't install to my computer? It might be interesting. I might have to get it, it's not expensive.

A very small Linux distribution that probably will work for you for the purpose of testing the Cybook is Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/ (it even boots my Laptop with a working network connection).
After it has booted just plug in the Cybook and open a console window and write "dmesg" and see if it have detected the Cybook. |

Do you have any friends with a computer? A computer at work, school? You don't need to install any drivers to test it. Just plug it into the USB port and it either works or it doesn't.

I just got a CyBook Gen3 today for Christmas (yay!). The first time I plugged it into my computer, the computer recognized it as an external device and I was able to sync some Mobipocket books to it.
Later, when I plugged the Cybook up to my computer, the computer did not recognize it at all. I played around with it...opened up Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > I found one that had a red mark on it and deleted it. The computer still did not recognize the Cybook. I reset the Cybook, plugged and unplugged the USB cable a few times, turned the Cybook on and off - the Cybook would show connected and the screen showed the connection picture, but the computer did not recognize it and Mobipocket did not recongize that the Cybook was connected to the computer. After a few tries, I heard the connection sound and the computer recognized it. I've been playing around with it some, and I think sometimes I've plugged the cable into the Cybook and it has not made a good connection. This is what I suggest....first plug the USB cable into a USB port on the computer, then turn the Cybook on and make sure you insert the connector straight into port on the bottom of the Cybook. Press the connector FIRMLY into place (until it clicks into place). Last edited by ProfJulie; 12-26-2007 at 02:31 AM. |

I first tried connecting the Cybook through an external hub, connected directly to the computer, in form of an additional panel on the front side of the computer. It showed unknown device for the Cybook and unknown device for the card. After a few tries it started showing them as mass storage, and correctly assigned drive letters, but access to them was still impossible.
At that point I connected the Cybook to USB 2.0 slot directly in the mainboard, and found that it always works ok in this slot. For you, it may be the problem with the device - it may require the behavior that is not in the standard, but simple USB ports have it. Or it may be the problem with the hub - the device may require USB standard feature the your hub doesn't have, and your other devices don't need. Just because other devices work with the hub it doesn't mean it's fully USB compatible. |

I don't see how to access files on my hard drive or on the cybook through the linux interface. Can you tell me how to use this to add and remove books from the cybook? I need to be able to do this on windows. Learning a new OS should not be required for using the darn thing. This is getting very frustrating. |

The fact that Puppy Linux could see and work with the Cybook, on this machine, clearly shows the problem is in your Windows setup. You know, it's probably going to be some simple "I should have seen it" ![]() Derek |

I've never had this problem before. I live in the sticks. There is no geek squad. The idea of having to pay someone to install this does not make me a happy girl. I'm thinking for $350 it should work as advertised, and if it doesn't, the company should be doing their best to get it working. |

Right now I've got Device Manager open and I'm seeing my Cybook as a USB Mass Storage Device. When I double-click on that, I get a dialog with three tabs, General, Driver and Details. On the General tab I see that it tells me that the device is working properly. I also see a button labeled 'Troubleshooting' and a combo box to enable and disable this device. Have you tried clicking the Troubleshooting button? And if that doesn't work, have you switched to the 'Driver' tab and clicked on the Update this driver button? Derek |
