I don't think you have to remove the old ones if the names haven't been changed given the version numbers are higher with the newer plugins. DiapDealer would know for sure though. I just removed my old ones. I went to Calibre: Preferences->Plugins->File Type Plugins and highlighted the ones I want to replace and removed them (one by one) and then I installed the latest ones. I did the same thing my first update, Kevin. This time I just installed over top of the old ones. 6 of one, half dozen of the other, I figure.

Hi,
Does anyone have access to an older Mobi book (typically .prc) that uses Type 1 encryption? These books do not use a pid but they are encrypted and won't work with MobiDeDRM (raises an error telling you that it is a Type 1 encrypted book). If you have one and are willing to share it for testing purposes only, the developers at Alf's and DR site are looking for one to test some expanded code for MobiDeDRM. Please pm me is you are willing to help out with a testcase. Thanks, KevinH |

For info had real trouble trying to de drm some books I just bought from Amazon. Have done many others, using unswindle so I know my setup is fine. I was getting an error saying PID not found. As someone mentioned it appears that Amazon have changed some of their encryption basing it on the Kindle's serial number generating a spurious PID number in the file. Using the new tools v3 the calibre plug in fails as well. Using the new tool found in version 3 simply called "KindleBooks" entering the device serial worked and it de drmd the book. Thought I would let others know as it took me over two hours of searching and trial and error before I solved this.

Nope haven't reported it anywhere. Think it fails because using calibre plug in there is no option to enter your device serial number.
EDIT: Sorry apparently you can enter the serial number in the same box where you enter the PID. Cheers Barney Last edited by Barneyabz; 01-04-2011 at 04:10 AM. |

Yes please report this on Apprentice Alf. I assume you added that same serial number to the plugin customization as it explained in the README for the plugins right? Without that serial number, a book from a standalone Kindle can't be decrypted even by the plugin? So if you did add the serial number correctly to the plugin and the plugin failed but the standalone KindleBooks gui tools did not, then something is messed up and I am sure the developers would love to hear about it to track it down and get it fixed. |

Hi,
From the README-K4MobiDeDRM-plugin.txt file: Configuration: Highlight the plugin (K4MobiDeDRM under the "File type plugins" category) and click the "Customize Plugin" button on Calibre's Preferences->Plugins page. Enter a comma separated list of your 10 digit PIDs. Include in this list (again separated by commas) any 16 digit serial numbers the standalone Kindles you may have (these typically begin "B0...") This is not needed if you only want to decode "Kindle for PC" or "Kindle for Mac" books. |

You are right - checked again and you can enter the serial number in the same place where you enter the PID - adjusted original post, only excuse I have is that after two hours of trying to de drm the book - when I knew my setup was working fine must have screwed up my eye sight!!
However bad news is that even though I have entered the PID and serial number I cannot get it working within calbre, I must be doing something wrong but no idea what. Tried removing PID and just entering the serial number but that didn't work either. As I said in a previous post I managed to de drm the book using the other tool so will make do with that for now. Just curious, but why do we dance around the de-drm issue in MR? It seems pretty clear that the process is quite legal and acceptable. Is there some unsavory element to it that we just have to whisper about it?

Of course, the Mobileread servers are in Canada, and the owner is not a US citizen, but given how easy the tools are to find and use even without a direct link (thanks to Apprentice Alf and others), is seems not to be worth a fight. |
