In the Boy Scouts, we just stuck a hot dog on a stick and held it over the campfire!

Sounds good. And nice that the Girl Scouts cook and serve meals to the Boy Scouts. It maintains the 'natural order' of things... (ducking and running...)

Homemade Biscuits

2 cups all purpose flour
1 stick of butter (1/2 cup)
1/2 tsp salt
1tbs baking powder
3/4 milk (or buttermilk)

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
2. In a large mixing bowl sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter with fork or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. [Alternative: using a cheese grater, grate very cold butter into flower and mix well]
3. Pour milk into flour mixture while stirring with a fork. Mix in milk until dough is soft, moist and pulls away from the side of the bowl.
4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and toss with flour until no longer sticky. Roll dough out into a 1/2 inch thick sheet and cut with a floured biscuit or cookie cutter. Press together unused dough and repeat rolling and cutting procedure.
5.Place biscuits on ungreased baking sheets and bake in preheated oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

For fluffier biscuits, knead 10 times prior to cutting and let rest 5 minutes before baking.

Oh. Well!! "Not letting you in", is it? Actually, I didn't so much get "in" as got a .DOC file dumped in my lap. Here, I'll upload it here for y'all. No, never mind that DOC file. Here's an even better chart (hope you can see this one).

those are Dutch Ovens, not Box Ovens. the Dutch ovens are the big cast iron affairs. there is a very exact science as to how many briquets go on the lid vs. underneath. in the Box Ovens, all of the briquets are underneath so the heat is rising, mimicking a regular oven

Here's the instructions for cooking in the box oven:

It's down in the document somewhere. On my way out the door right now so I can't look to see exactly where, but I saw it yesterday.

Now THAT is the ratio that I remember. I guess shortening doesn't need to be so exact. I used to use Crisco butter flavored shortening if I didn't want to mess with butter. Tasted just about the same.

Try adding a half spoonful of vanilla extract, and a heaping tablespoon of sugar... I think you'll fall in love with the results. I did.
