While the idea is enticing, it would be very ethically dicey for me to do so. Even giving free advice can create an attorney-client relationship, and I could still be held responsible to the bar and the law if I gave incorrect advice to someone not in my jurisdiction. Yes, even if i warn them that it may not be true for where they are, they could still turn around and sue me for it if my advice leads them (or they at least say it leads them) into doing something detrimental.

Spoken like a true lawyer! Use a whole paragraph when a simple "no" would suffice.

And I'm not even like Dickens - I don't get paid by the word, or even the hour because I'm corporate

I use Last Pass. Is that similar to IronKey? I have not had any problems using a credit card with PayPal, adding it in just before the purchase. Confirming a bank account is another issue entirely.

IronKey is a secure flash drive with some nifty features:
Hardware-Level Key Management
Secure & Private Web Browsing
Onboard virtual keyboard applet to defend against keyboard loggers

IronKey seems like a great tool. I use LastPass on my USB stick from within portable FireFox when I am using computers that are not my own or when I am using WiFi over a dicey/public network.

OK, here is another rant. I wrote something similar once, but the sentiment keeps popping up, so here goes again. I honestly can't stand the "us against them" attitude that some people in these forums insist on adopting.

This isn't some battlefield we are on. I'm not at war against a "Sony" person, or a "Nook" person, simply because I own a Kindle. If I browse the Sony sub-forum and see an interesting topic, I shouldn't feel scared or awkward about posting -- but a lot of users make people feel that way. They draw this line in the sand and pretty much say: Don't violate my territory!

Some folks act like these forums are some game of survival, and we're divided into opposite camps and dare not mingle with the enemy. Seriously people, I shouldn't have to scale the Great Wall of Ebook to take a risky peek at the other side.

Could I win a case if I were to sue you for saying this? It messed me up somehow.

You think that's bad, check out some of the Mac-vs-Linux-vs-Windows arguments you can find elsewhere...MR is tame by comparison. There are trolls in every forum; I vent about them here, then go over to the "What Are You Doing RIGHT NOW" thread in the Lounge for some feel-good.

Depends on what the advice is and how stupid the attorney giving it is.

An Example: Bob Bonehead of Bonehead, Idiot and Stupid LLC gives free advice to his buddy at a party about not paying his child support. Now Bob is from South Carolina and his buddy is from New York. Turns out that if Bob stops paying his child support because he lost his job in South Carolina, thats ok. In New York its not. Go to jail, do not pass go stuff. But Bob has an ethical responsibility to make sure that his buddy does not act on his advice or better yet, he just shouldn't give it. If his buddy sues him, he might well win in a malpractice action of some sort, "free advice" not withstanding.

* Disclaimer : i do not practice in NY or SC and have no idea what the child support laws are in those states.

For myself, I'm seeing enough nastiness in MobileRead these days without needing to go into the snake pit that a religious or political forum could be.

Well the OS wars are really just religious wars.

A bit like the DRM/pirate/Freedom of speech wars....
