I have no idea why they usually have that lag and things are a bit muddier with Arnold being offline, so I don't know how long it will take for the link to be added. |

If he really thought my site was a pirate site, why didn't he write Baen, just like I pretty much dare anyone to in my disclaimer? I wanted to post a reply, but it wasn't worth the signup charge. |

I'm in love with The Sharing Knife series and have been so for years. ![]() Coincidently, I get angry when almost everyone else gripes that The Sharing Knife was not Bujold's best works. Maybe it wasn't for them but it is for me. Because of the way these critics down The Sharing Knife in favor of her other works, I will not read anything else by LMB. ![]() ![]() Other works I favor are: Sarah Monette's Doctrine of Labyrinths series and Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series. I love wizards and fay and elves or the like. I don't like corny bodice-rippers but I do not fear the word penis in print! Male slash a plus but not necessary. Unrealistic, realistic people are titillating. Please no trying to turn me towards Harry Potter, Twilight, Witch and the Wardrobe, or LOTR. Thanks. ![]() |

I'm afraid I don't understand your logic, JemCrystal - because everyone says Bujold's other works are *better* than The Sharing Knife, you won't read them?
Well, if you won't read the Vorkosigan books (which I HIGHLY recommend, btw), then you should read the Chalion books. There's both fantasy and romance in all three of them - I'll bet you'll like them even better than The Sharing Knife. I have to admit my problem with the Sharing Knife began in the first book, because almost the entire book is taken up with wedding preparations for two characters who I found relatively bland - while LMB had given such short shrift to Miles Vorkosigan and Ekaterine's wedding, two characters that I had so much more invested in. It rather tainted the entire series for me. But that's just me. Anyhoo, give Chalion a try. |

![]() If you haven't read Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint, you absolutely must. It's fantasy, sort of, but no elves or the like. The prose it absolutely beautiful. The romantic pairing is between two men, both compelling characters but not without their (realistic) faults. I recommend it to anyone who likes the Nightrunner books, in particular. I can't say enough good things about it. |

I loved loved loved Cordelias Honor, then I moved onto Warriors Apprentice...which to me was a HUGE letdown. So much so that I'm not very interested in the rest of the series.
It was next in the chronology...did I move onto the wrong book though? I almost found the story of Elena (the daughter) to be more compelling, and I wish there was a book about her further adventures. |

What did you love about Cordelia's Honor? The Warrior's Apprentice is pretty different in tone, and I'm thinking that some of the appeal of Cordelia's Honor might be rediscovered starting from Komarr onwards, if for the romance and politicking. Maybe Mirror Dance, Memory, and so forth for character development. (All later books in the series, unfortunately.) To be honest, though they're still excellent books by any standard, I'm not the biggest fan of the 'Naismith' novels, which are most of the early books in the Vorkosigan series.
Seeing as you've read The Warrior's Apprentice, try The Mountains of Mourning. It comes right after in the timeline, and its tone is more measured and reflective, a mystery short story as opposed to the frenetic action of The Warrior's Apprentice. If you like the short story, then you might like the following book The Vor Game better too, which is still frenetic but toned down some. Last edited by viviena; 01-03-2011 at 10:34 PM. |

"The Mountains of Mourning" is one of the best things I've ever read. Based on the strength of it, I tore through the rest of the (ebook-available) Vorkosigan books. I agree, I don't like the Naismith books as well, but considering how much I loved the rest that's not that damning a review.
