s1mp, since you are going to be your mom's tech support, I would first wait to see if you like what you bought. (I think you will!)
If so, I would get her that, because your familiarity with the device will make it easy for you to answer her questions. |

Or a Sony. It is crisp and clearly readable, copes excellently with PDF's (some library books here are PDF's) and is easy to work. As you just swipe to turn pages and tap for the dictionary it is the most easy to handle I ever saw. It is a natural for library books and you can buy anywhere you like, but Amazon.

But I would not give someone over 50 a LCD-screened device. It is prone to cause eyestrain and there are perfect e-ink devices on the market...

Poppaea, the jetBook Lite has a reflective TFT screen, so eyestrain is not an issue. It's like looking at a digital watch or a pocket calculator.

My mother just went to go visit her neice who has a B&N Nook. I asked mom to look at it and try it out. Then she can look at my wife's Kindle 3, and then my Jetbook Lite whenever I get it. From those three maybe we can find the right one for her. Without knowing any better, I wonder if the Nook would be her best bet.

I'm 62 & have both the Nook & the Kindle3. If she likes to use the library, the Nook will be the easiest. If not then as far as I'm concerned both the Nook & the Kindle 3 are great easy to use e-readers.

My Mother does like to use the library because where we live we have three branches within 10 min or less from the house. We also have two B&N stores within 5-10 min from the house. Because of that and also being told that the Nook works out the box with no extra work to use library books.....that somewhat makes it a better choice for her. I realize that I can strip DRM and change file formats and mod this and that file....and for me that is ok, but for mom I would rather make it as simple as I can for her. She is looking at a Nook tonight, then will look at my wife's Kindle 3, and I will show her my JetBook Lite when I get it. Maybe from those three we can find the right unit for her.
Update: She likes the B&N Nook, so if she decides to buy in the an ereader, it will be a Nook. ![]() Last edited by s1mp13m4n; 01-03-2011 at 10:51 PM. |
