You don't seem to get the point. None of these companies had to rely on third-party apps to get the device doing what is is supposed to. Pre-release firmware I am accustomed to. But it's lame to tell customers to install the txtr app for reading DRM'd ePub.

I didn't. Just sold it two days ago. This griping is just some after-pains. At least it helped me to classify Pocketbook as a company.

My store has always positioned it as a way to use all the other apps rather than just for reading with the PB app.

You make it sound like a negative that the other apps install and work. IT's strength /benefit is to be able to very easily install the apps from the other major book sellers.

NO! IT's LUCK is to be able to very easily install the apps from the other major book sellers.
Where would it stand if not ? And this is what is annoying us.

from the very first announcement it was said that it would be an android tablet that would be very open so you could install other apps. its not luck it was by design.

2 glas of Rioja so far, but still not silly . Of course it should be able to accept apps, that is what Android is for. By Luck I meant not the accepting of apps, but that PB is lucky that those external reader apps exist and do an excellent job, since the PB reader itself is just simply not good in the IQ. Which is a pity since the product claim, at least in Europe, positions it as a reader, not as a tablet.

Tell that to B&N and Pandigital and the other vendors selling locked android devices.
Android is for whatever the hardware manufacturer says its for.
That's why the telcos love it; they can do whatever they want with it.

The IQ is what it is.
A generic android tablet.
And this has been well documented since well before shipment.
From day one it was clear it was intended for users who wanted to run third party apps. (That is why Dulins books is testing apps to post at the store's website.)
And it's been clear since october/november it would ship with non-functional PB apps.
(Check the threads around here.)
Those of us that did our homework knew exactly what we were signing up for.

And that is why the price hike is questionable: a generic 7in tablet at US$149 is competitive but at $180 it isn't.
You don't reasonably expect luxury features from a Yaris but you do from a Mini.
Conversely, you don't sell many of the former if you price it like the latter.
As consumers its our job to know which is which before opening the wallet.
And that is one of the reasons these forums exist, to help us learn what the products are like before buying.

You don't need to be rude nor insulting, merry Xmas to you too.

In Europe this has never been said, so we were not informed that "it would ship with non-functional PB apps".

"Check the threads" in the german sub-forum, as you so nicely put it.

PS: what has happened to this Forum, which used to be if not always nice at least civil ? and what has happened to you, fjtorres, who indeed used to be nice ?

You are exactly right! The IQ does allow you to add apps for the various different reader stores like Kindle, Nook, and Kobo. No other Andriod Tablet that is sold and marketed in the U.S. allows you to do that. The Nook and Pandigital Novel are locked down so you can only use their software. That is why I ordered the IQ. Can't wait to get it next week.

Samsung Galaxy ?
Archos 70 ?
Archos 101 ?

Add "for this price" and then you are right.

FYI Nook Color and PDN have both been "jailbroken".

As aceflor wrote this hasn't been made clear to European/German speaking customers or on the German board of MR. I do browse the English board, but don't expect me to read all comments.

It would also have been Pocketbook's (PB Germany, that is) responsibility to state this clear on their very own website, not on this quasi-official board, which, though being large, is not read or known by all PB customers.

Why do all businesses insist on doing things half-assed, and use us as guinea pigs for their unfinished products?

It's crap like this, that makes me almost totally disinterested in getting anything from companies that do this.

This just seems to be the last nail in the PB coffin. Given their epic fail with 602 and 902 not implementing most of the advertised features, moreover, simply becoming "dead" after a very short usage for many users ... too bad to see another potentially promising company go down the drain.

602 was clearly "dead on arrival" as it cannot compete with kindle on price and with sony on design quality, 902 had a marginal chance of making it, but not anymore ...
