Hello,

I order this http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.47048, is very cheap (3€ free shipping) but it is a kind of generic bag for ebook.

I should receive in some days, I will tell you my opinion about it.

Regards.

The dictionary I guess is the same than the E60. It is in the ebook without being connected to internet. It is quite simple but ... in France is FR-EN-FR.

Hi,

I got a French E60 bought at Carrefour.
I could update its firmware to 1002, it was straightforward.

I could also update to Korean 1013 using the magic number trick + renaming the file.
There are additional functionalities in the 1013 (Newspaper, Scrapbook...) but it only supports Korean and English, and it seems there is no dictionary. On top of that, it seems that the device gets less stable and I had to reset it a couple of times.

Finally, I went back to French 1002.

Anyone having similar experience?

Hello,

Your experience is very interesting !
So you didn't had problems to downgrade back from 1013 to 1002 ? This is the main doubt that prevented me to try the foreign updates onto my french version !

The downgrade was straightforward, or you needed to hack something (renaming french version 1002 to 1014, or something like that) ?

Thank you very much !

It was almost straightforward: after I upgraded to 1013, my reader behaved just like a Korean one, which means that:
  • its default language was Korean (but you can switch back to English, provided you remember which menus to use);
  • to downgrade to 1002, I had to use the magic number + renaming trick, but the way round (i.e. fooling the device so that it takes the 1002 update file for a Korean one).

Easy.

hi folks

i bought an E60 in WHSmiths earlier in the month. so far i'm very happy with it, but was wondering if anyone had any experience of updating a UK device with foreign firmware. so far i can only see reports from people updating french devices.

of course, there is no support page for the E60 on samsung UK

i'm continuing to read this thread, which seems to be the only real information for firmware on the whole web that i can find.

i think it's a damn shame they're not supporting this device anymore, because it really is a lovely thing

The screen flash on the Samsung E65 is caused by it refreshing the entire screen to fully clear off text from proceeding pages. You can switch this option off in the Settings menu so that it only fully refreshes the screen at longer intervals. This gives a far smoother page transition.

I would like to know if someone had tried the Krap's method about changing the default website in the library? (see page 5 with the Ruby's code and the proxy)

As answered by private message, this is NOT an injection on the E60, it requires a running computer - this is intented for tests and hack only.
It doesn't change (permanently) the default web address asked by the E60, but just change on the fly the query to Carrefour's library (easy to change for other vendors) to return google instead, and thus to let you browse the web.

I've tried your method and it works.
Nice and thank you for your help. Has you said, this is experimentation. I've tried wikipedia but it was extremely slow. Well, thanks a lot.

Hi people,

I buy myself an E65 as a Christmas present and I have information that can be of interest to other owners:

As I'm a linux and opensource passionate, the first thing I did was to request to Samsung the publication of all opensource code used in the firmware of the E65, as in the site opensource.samsung.com they had published only the E60 code.

It was refreshing how quickly they answered to my request. If you head now to opensource.samsung.com you can find all the E65 opensource code, as well as firmware images for the french and spanish versions, and information about how to build and install your own modifications.

I plan to take a look into it. Nothing serious, but who knows if I can learn something while playing.

Best regards.

Hi! I've already downloaded firmware image from opensource (10_E65.zip), unzipped under windows-7-64b and OpenSuse (live), but I can't see INSTALLATION & README files (I'm unable to open them). I'm interested in change home web page, but I don't know how to find firmware archives inside the e-reader, or where to install anything...

Getting mad with the Samsung! Help, please!

Thanks a lot.

(P.S. Are you Spanish, Dalonso? My English is a bit confusing...)
