Are you short too? It took me many months to realise that there was anything above the Quick Reply box, as I couldn't see that high. All that time people assumed I was just a Fool with a penchant for Absurdism, when really I was just unwittingly placing my seeming non sequiturs randomly throughout the forums.

I was totally confused in the beginning, after 1000 posts it's getting better

And yes the fear of starting a thread that's already been started is there...but that's what I use the search for.

We should search of course, and I've missed some similar threads even when I've done so. But how far should we search?

In one post Amazon is working hard for the Kindle I noted a news item on Google News at the time. I searched under "News" on MR and saw nothing.

Nothing there, so I posted what I thought was news. I was then informed that the information was covered in the Kindle section. The problem is, not having a Kindle, I rarely read the Kindle section.

So was HarryT wrong in pointing that out to me? Not at all. As I said, that's one of their jobs as a Mod. But neither was I wrong, because my post was the only one in the "News" section that covered that story.

Queentess was able to find the reference and all ended well.

That is just an easily defined example, and is not the cause of the rant.

So how far should we search before posting?

The Vent and Rant Thread has (as of this moment) 14,287 posts. Should we read all of the posts to make sure that no one else has posted about ~~~~~~~ before we post? Pick any other long thread and you'll have the same conundrum. Now remember that those are only a very small part of MobileRead.

Now that I'm through venting I'll get down of my high horse.

Ok folks. Break it up, go about your business. There's nothing to see here.

It's not always a search give you any hint either. It would have to be very specific to be of any use.

I know I try to make a search for the music I post so someone else hasn't already posted the same, but YouTube usually contains several different clips for the same music so even then I'm not guaranteed that it haven't been posted before with another clip.

First of all, thinkpadx, your music selections are usually good so that's not a problem.

But in this particular area I sometimes like different versions of a song. A live version of a song is a different version than a studio produced version. I like some in one form and may dislike it in the other form. On top of that if the mood hits you to replay a song again that’s fine with me. I get in that mood every now and again.

I've seen some forums where they don't try to hard to reduce duplicate threads, and that can be a problem. After a while you don't want to be bothered going there.

The opposite of that would be a zero tolerance for any similar postings. Two threads may appear to be similar, or even be similar, but it's the context or location that can make the difference.

And then there is the case where a similar thread is inadvertently redundant. That'll happen. Why make a big deal about it.

We do not "as a rule" delete duplicate threads. As you say... it happens.. heck it happens a lot here. As a matter of fact, look around, and you will see dozens of threads about the same topics. So, that should illustrate that we are not all that "anal".

However, there are times where news will come out, or a new model, or something and several threads about the same thing are started within hourse and sometimes minutes of each other... usually in separate forums. When this happens, and we notice it, we try to close the newest ones with a link to the conversation. This is generally appreciated by most members since all the convo about that new "thang" is focused to one thread.

BTW: There is an exception to this rule in the "self-promo" section. We do not allow an author to come in every day or hour and start yet another thread about their ebook just to get more traffic. If you want to advertise here, contact Alex and he will be happy to give you the banner rates.

I see Mods as demigods (as in Greek mythology) not as common "people".

You guys (male & female collectively) have a job to do - maintain MR as an interesting and civil oasis on the internet.

We can think of it like traffic cops. While I know what I’m doing & can speed, I realize that we need someone to control the riff-raff.

By the way, the demigods business? Bummer. Most of them lot came to bad ends.

Here's my rant. Just back from my annual eye exam. Nothing has changed but three different people all but twisted my arm to force me to "use my benefits" cause they'd go to waste if not.....sheesh isn't it exactly that kind of behavior the helps to increase our insurance costs!

And no, I didn't "use my benefit" - I've already got three pair of perfectly good glasses that I don't use (cause I use lesser power over-the-counter ones).
