What? Sounds like a broken or dirty key....

Used to be able to clean the old old old keyboards, but not likely true any more...

External keyboard or trip to the repair/replace shop.

Thanks. I've done a diy repair job - just yanked up one corner of the S key to see if it came off (didn't) but at least now it works although the bottom left corner is now raised up at an angle so it looks weird.

Still not perfect as you have to hit it in the right spot but this laptop is really knackered - at least that's what I keep telling hubby and dropping hints about the snazzy new netbook he has

You might try spraying under it with a can of compressed air, or better yet, electrical contact cleaner. I wouldn't recommend WD-40, though. It leaves a residue.

Most will depend on the application you're using (since they need size changes, superscripting and subscripting, etc.) But there are some simple characters.

Infinity is alt-5: ∞
not equals is alt-=: ≠
pi is alt-p: π
PI is alt-shift-p: ∏
derivitive is alt-d: ∂

and there are others. The Keyboard Viewer is the easiest way to find them all.
