I recv'd confirmation from Sony customer service today that my Palm Z22 (color screen) qualifies for a $75 voucher. I think the 650 has my name on it.

Received my voucher for an iPhone 1G with shattered screen (I put a note saying be careful). Got the full $75.00 even though it was not a listed device!

Bummed I missed the sale though. I actually sent it in a week before that, but it obviously took a while to get registered.

I am happy to report (and rather baffled!) that Sony took my broken jetBook that I mailed in. The Sony Style store said they wouldn't accept cracked screens. Anyway, now with another $75 off I'm going to buy a PRS-350 for my wife!

I would guess that in-store they aren't equipped to handle broken screens. My iPhone screen was mostly intact, but I still had a couple of micro cuts after picking it up -- and I was extremely careful. Just handing the thing off to a salesperson is an accident waiting to happen.

When I sent mine iPhone in, it looked like it went directly to the recycle center. I presume that staff has been trained in handling all sorts of broken electronics with tiny sharp thingamajigs poking out every which way including loose. Safety first.

Definite kudos to Sony here. Not only are they doing something good for the environment, they're being fairly liberal in their acceptance policy (my iPhone broke two "rules" by not being listed and having a busted screen!), and giving full credit. No doubt there's tax write offs involved, but it's still a darned nice service!

eMail recv'd from Sony Recycling Center. They recv'd my Palm Zire Z22 and have awarded me a $75 credit towards a new Sony eReader.

Probably will get the 650 as the 350's screen size just is too small for a decent amount of text at a readable size (YMMV, of course). That would bring the cost down to about $160+tax. Anyone know where the 650 might be on sale?

As Sony is virtually stockless (is that a real word?) online for the 650, I sent my son (who lives near the La Cantera Mall in San Antonio) over to the Sony store where they had the red 650 in stock. After a bit of confusion (the store manager wasn't familiar with the credit coupon and was asking for the device to be traded in - *grin*), all proceeded per plan and my son is bringing the Sony home for the holidays later this week. I was intending it as a gift for my wife but she's been anti-technology (until she needs it - like when she decided she hated her Acer and I swapped it out for a PowerBook and she's quite happy now). Maybe the red Sony will be mine!

Emailing your own documents to Amazon does not lock them down; it generates files that can be used on any ereader that can read Mobipocket files (such as the Cybook Opus/Gen3 and the Pocketbook models). The Sony Readers are fine devices; they can stand on their own without the need to trash talk the competition.
