Yes, Stuart, but if you do the sqlite replacement after you do the update, you will find that it makes your preloaded books work with the dictionary and takes care of many other things that can go wrong. See the installation thread.

I like it

I like it a lot, the page turns seem faster, I can put in web pages (simple ones), It reads rtf and text.

It holds out promise - I mean they have put in things that they have to make better.

The dictionary must pick up words better and work with ordinary docs (epubs, rtf, txt), The font resizing must work on rtf and the use of the buttons on the left hand side should work as quickly as before.

Above all it holds out the promise of being able to navigate to a particular page at last. I can wait a few more months!

You can nuke the DB post-upgrade too. I tested this. You do loose the 100 built-ins, but all new synced books (desktop and ADE) work just fine.

I did the USB upgrade, then found the thread on upgrades which suggested doing a factory reset first. I don't know if that would have impacted me much, as my books are on an SD card anyway.

The USB upgrade went smoothly. I then did the images/kepub/sqlite replacement as suggested, and then a factory reset. Plugged in the SD card, and fired it back up.

I seem to remember I used to get a progress bar indicating the search/update of new material - I thought my Kobo had frozen as I only had the little black boxes on the lower right of the screen. I'm guessing that the detection occurred behind the scenes, and just took longer. I sort of miss that progress bar. Maybe this was a onetime abberation.

The other issue I have (and it's minor) is book covers showing. The options are turned on for Show cover on both off, and standby. I was not seeing a cover for either. I plugged the Kobo into a wall charger overnight, and the cover now shows when I turn it off, however I still do not get a cover on standby.

Perhaps an additional factory reset and synch? (once I finish this book of course - it has limited chapter markings, and 160+ pages is a lot to go through manually.) I admit I was hoping for a 'go to page...' option, but that is minor.

No real issues to mention. Just the quirks. I do notice better response time, and I'm glad to have my cover option back. I also appreciate the option to disable auto-off.

Try resetting the cover options--set them once to no covers, and then again to covers.

I did try that. I have a feeling it may be this one book. I have had other issues with this book (including locking up of the Kobo regularly), so in my case it may just be a bad ePub.

The cover stopped displaying suddenly when I power off now. I opened the e-pub and it is split into a huge amount of html files, so I am guessing that it is having issues finding the cover.

I have also had issues when I open the book from power off, the page displays as blank except for the small page number on the right hand side. Paging forward or backward one page, and then back to that page corrects it.

I'll be trying another book shortly.

I haven't had any issues with the Kobo from the time I bought it until this one book. The other Kobo in the house had never had an issue. Not sure when we'll move it to the new firmware - no real hurry since it's working great.

Thanks taming, and sorry if this was off topic.

I will be creating an SD card to use in case I need to reapply the firmware, and for upgrading the 2nd Kobo.

It was indeed an issue with the book. While I was building the SD Card, I used Calibre to convert the ePub to a LIT file, and then deleted the ePub and converted it back from a LIT to an ePub. Whatever was causing the issue looks like it was in the TOC, or the HTML structure in the ePub. The conversion seems to have stripped out whatever was causing the issue.

Happiness reigns. Off to finish my book. Thanks for your assistance.

Thought the overall process of upgrading was much smoother with 1.8 than 1.4. Still had some of the issues already noted on the forums but a factory reset took care of the issues I was experiencing - all in all fairly painless.
Question for the Kobo users - I signed up for email notices from Kobobooks way back when I bought my Kobo (first release) and I have yet to get any type of email notification from them. I found out about this OS upgrade through this forum - is anyone getting email notices from them?

I get 2-3 a day it seems. Check your spam settings, perhaps?
