I take your point about Georgie's loyalty, but yes, there are the Emmet elements also. The music, for one, and then I suspect that poor Emmet is closeted much as Georgie was. I know he's divorced, but that's more proof than counter-prooof.

As for Mrs. B-F, I think we have to remember that Lucia tends to best Mapp in their confrontations. I'm not sure Mapp has an exact corollary. Perhaps Quaint Irene is Onslow, however?

I just finished Hangman's Daughter by Oliver Potzsch. It was one of the Kindle freebies last month. First, it is not about the daughter, which makes a misleading impression.

BUT the book is terrific. It is based on the author's ancestors, who were a dynasty of hangmen.

The story is a murder mystery involving witch trials, torture, and compassion and love. It is a meaty book, 448 pages for the paperback. I begrudged having to put it down to eat or sleep. The story is gripping, and the history comes alive.

I recommend this book to everyone.

This sounds good. I'll add this to my list also. My list is growing. I better get cracking.

I'm reading it too. I like when he talks about various guitar playing techniques which he has genuine passion for.

It was well worth reading. I'll certainly start on the second volume soon. Despite the sometimes archaic translation, I really enjoyed the book. It made me appreciate why so many adaptions have been made of it.

It also made me appreciate more what a good job Sarah A. Hoyt (writing as Sarah D'Almeida) made of her Musketeer's Mysteries

But next up for me is the January 2011 issue of Asimov's SF magazine.

I'm about halfway through Stettin Station by David Downing because I'm sucker for anything set in the 1930s/40s. Downing's series has an Anglo-American longtime expat in Berlin, a journalist who gets mixed up in espionage and mystery mostly to hold out hope of protecting his son and girlfriend in a doomed Germany. The details are good and the characters drawn well enough, but Downing frustrates me by often introducing too many subplots that have equal stakes. It's the same with this one, but I'm entertained and I'm sure I'll read the next one.

I've been crazy-busy lately, and just haven't had as much reading time as I usually try to carve out. But I did just finish a new book- "Triune." It's about three brothers who suddenly discover they are, uh, shall I say "otherwordly?" Don't want to give too much away. I reviewed it here.

After numerous recommendations here on MR, I picked up and finished "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins last night.

I don't read much YA fiction, but this is a well written book. I throughly enjoyed the story, but the ending ended so abruptly I must admit to being disappointed. Guess I'll have to read the next in the series to see what happens next.

That was a great series, one of those that you can't help but finish immediately. Some don't like the third book as much as the first two, but I thought they were all great.

Re-reading my way through the Aaron Elkins Gideon Oliver series. It's about a forensic anthropologist, who has become known (much to his sorrow) as "The Skeleton Detective". I re-read the first two to reacquaint myself with the characters, then skipped to "Skeleton Dance" (tenth in the series) because it was the first one I hadn't read.

Also just finished my ARC of "Though Not Dead" Dana Stabenow's 18th in the Kate Shugak series. I can't say much about it though, since it doesn't publish til February. (I won an advance copy at a fan club chat )
