Not true. If you are in the current "batch" for a new update, and wireless is on for long enough, the update is automatic. You also have the option of updating manually, or via the menu.

The simple test is "Is the word one you would use in front of a small child?" If it isn't, perhaps you shouldn't use it in a post on MR. There will be areas like the Politics and Religion section where we assume strong language is likely, but that is an opt-in section where it's a reasonable bet that kids won't be involved. And unfortunately, some folks on MR who are legally adults do behave like children. Age and maturity are only loosely related. ______ Dennis |

YOU as the owner have to turn wifi/3G on before it will check for updates. Wifi and/or 3G OFF = no automatic update while turned off |

Actually that's a valid point... IF the Kindle remote facilities can be turned on by Amazon then anyone with the requisite skills and information can do the same... wow, a new threat to democracy and freedom caused by Amazon...

If your wifi/3G is OFF, there is NO communication in or out. Therefore it is literally impossible for them to turn it on for any reason from their side. Just as it is impossible for the Kindle itself to turn the wifi/3G on automatically since your selection of turning it OFF tells the device the connection is not available. Doesn't matter if the Kindle is turned off, in sleep mode or in use. OFF IS OFF Unfortunately the Nook DOES auto connect for library and firmware updates, and turn the wifi/3G on and then off, unless it is set in airplane mode. |

The Roayl Egyptians didn't have such a stigma and it kind of showed. King Tut had all sorts of weird problems and most ended up with funny shaped heads. And then when the Greeks conquered Egypt and started doing the same thing, they started looking funny after a few generations. And while it was mostly cousins, just look at European royalty. This is the lovely belief that far too many Kindle owners express (here and elswhere)--that their device is superior, and all others are cheap junk. And then they wonder why non-Kindle owners get upset with them and/or point out the limitations of the Kindle.

How would a Kindle receive a signal to turn on the wifi or 3g if the wifi is off? Are Kindles telepathic?

![]() ![]() Really? So you use generalized comments to put me in a stereotypical group with others simply because I have a different ereader than you do? 1) I just got my Kindle 2) I haven't read more than 20 pages of a any given book on mine yet due to work and holiday stuff. 3) Looking at his profile info, he has one of the cheapest and worst made ereaders currently available based on all the reviews out there (most rate the Aluratek reader with 1 or 2 out of 5), how else can that be taken? Also considering the fact that they spelled the name of it wrong. When he (or she) is commenting on a device which they know little to nothing about, especially spreading lies all over the place with 90% of their posts on this forum.
