Anyone who complains about the battery life isn't turning it off after reading. Mine lasts for over two weeks when I turn it off after every read (used to let it 'sleep', and it drained the battery).

I find the page turns just fine. I press 'turn' as I am reading the last line (I do the same thing when I physically turn pages with real books), and it's timed perfectly.

Man - I've read sooooo many library books in the past few months I've owned it. I can't keep up!!!!!!!! My Kobo has been the best investment I've made in lord knows how long...

One thing that can create outrageously long page turns (10 seconds or more) is a poorly made epub file. Long books definitely require splitting into chapters. I reformat ALL my epubs using Sigil, and while it is fairly rare, I do occasionally run into epubs with all the text contained in a single xhtml file. It does not sound like you have run into anything this bad, so I'm mostly posting this for others who may have.

As i've said (contrary to popular belief here at the moment) the Kobo does what it does best in its price bracket... at least over here in Australia.

kobo 2 ? is that the wifi version you're talking about ? coz mine is the wifi version.. and it took roughly 2 seconds to flip a page while my friend's kindle 3 took about half a second to flip a page..(envy mode altogether again )

if it is a new kobo where can i see the specs ? been to koboreader page but there's no info on it

The Kobo is a great little gadget. OK, there are a few quirks but all in all, for the price it's pretty darn good. I think that if the grumps looked objectively at it and did a pro/con comparison they'd be surprised. Some people would find the downside in a $Mega lottery win...

Two seconds? Seriously? I can't hit the page turn button before being on the last word of the page because it will flip too quickly to the next page and I'll have to go back to the previous page to see the last few words (something I do more than I should - I never expect it to turn the page that quickly!) It definitely does not take two seconds to turn a page on Kobo wifi ... not even a full second.

And after reading something in the K original firmware update thread about the new firmware allowing users to read .txt and .rtf files, I checked the Kobo wifi and am ecstatic to report it also reads those two file formats! I must have been living under a rock - I had no idea!

I had to giggle. I have been using the original Kobo since the beta process began. I got my hands on my WiFi reader today for the first time since then (my husband has been using it) and I was astounded by how much faster it loads books, changes chapters, etc. It has a much faster processor and, I believe, more available RAM for these functions. Page turning on both machines has always been fine, from my perspective.

The original Kobo went through a huge amount of optimization so that the features on the WiFi version could be used on Kobo--but the hardware definitely makes a difference.

With 1.4 I noticed that Kobo formatted books were much faster for page turns than ePub, I'm guessing this is because of the way the device had to load the book (perhaps with the Kobo format it would only load a single chapter while with ePub it has to the almost the whole thing). With ePub books I always had to press the page flip button when I started the 3rd last line, with Kobo format I'd press the flip button somewhere during the 2nd last line. With 1.8 I've only read kepubs (newer Kobo format) and I press the flip button during the last line.

I also realized that when I performed my comparison between the Kobo Wifi and my Original Kobo I was comparing ePub against a kepub so I don't know what difference exists between them. I've got a Kobo Wifi on order now so hopefully I'll be able to report on that soon.

The downside to the new firmware is that with kepubs the chapter changes appear slower than they used to be. For proper books I think this would work fine but I have one book which is a set of Sunday editorial columns reprinted so each chapter is about 5-8 pages, with something like that it could be a bit more frustrating.

I have come to realize that the reason for most of the groaning has to do with the difference between the first Kobo and the Kobo Wifi. As a Wifi user I couldn't understand the complaints. I am glad to see that the older Kobo has got a firmware update to help things. I think some of it has to do with expectations. Having been a gadget girl for a long time I am used to first adopters pains. This is why I waited until the second gen Kobo and wasn't interested in paying too much for any ereader. Since I bought mine the latest Sony models have hit the stores. It is always the way with a new type of gadget that they improve rapidly. My only real beef with my Kobo is the torn plastic on the dpad. Not sure if it is worth exchanging for that or if a new one would be any different.

Same here. For me it's the habit from reading paper books of inserting my finger under the page, ready for flipping when I reach the last word; so with the kobo I put my finger on that button when I get to the last sentence or so, but half the time end up hitting it to early and have to go back. I find the page flip on the Kobo Wifi is about as fast as a manual flip in a paper book.

And after reading something in the K original firmware update thread about the new firmware allowing users to read .txt and .rtf files, I checked the Kobo wifi and am ecstatic to report it also reads those two file formats! I must have been living under a rock - I had no idea!

Me neither! Wonder if it's the same rock I was under?

honestly sir, i've counted the seconds myself, is my kobo defected somehow ?
cause i thought that this is a common behaviour for a kobo reader ..
about 1 second for the ink to vanish and about another second for it to reappear.. well maybe not the exact 2 seconds but it was close to it

Hmm. Is this with every ebook on the Ko2? I know that some screwed-up epubs can take longer to have pages flipped -- I've experienced this with bad ePubs on both my Sony 350 (which is usually just as fast as the K3) and the original Kobo.

''OMG how long does it take to turn a real page in a book when you are in bed maybe longer than two seconds by the time everything is straightened out, you have moved etc especially in a thick paperback towards the end or or a heavy hardback .......some of these people need a bex and a lie down"

I think it largely depends on the book, I found sideloaded ePub books took longer to flip than Kobo purchased or Kobo pre-loaded books. And with sideloaded books it probably also depends a lot on how well the ebook was created (I don't mean the styling but how well it was technically formatted).
