same for me here, I keep doors open when other people follow; regardless of their sex and age, as well as thank for this helpful politenes, especially since using a walking stick Isometimes don't have a free hand. Happened to me too being thanked with a sneered "I can do that myself" - by a woman.

altough the most strange and humiliating thing ever happened to me was a reaction to a compliment - (for those no more familiar with this art: it is not a sexually tainted comment or a dumb pickup line) the adressed one halted and simply said:
"I won't sleep with you." I mean - WTF?

I remember girls on dates, or even just unknown women, telling me I don't have to open doors for them, they can do it themselves. A few even took the door from me and held it 'till I went thru.

I never tried to explain that I held it open for men as well. I try real hard not to argue with stupidity. I'm afraid that I fail all too often. The older I get the less I'm willing to put up with it.

I am in a very unique position here. I was also born and raised here in the south. I also happen to be a homosexual. I open doors for ladies out of habit and some new sort of chivalry i guess. I've done it all my life, long before I actually figured out who I was.
Funny that, only other gay women seem to mind. By and large, everyone else is appreciative. Anyone more than 10 years older than me just seems to be shocked that someone under 30 (albeit barely) is polite enough TO open a door anymore.
On the flipside, I don't mind at all when a guy holds the door open for me or my partner. Maybe its because I've not dated in more than 10 years, but its never struck me as a guy trying to get me into bed.
But back to the OP's story, I know all the neighbors in my building, and I have to think that they'd help me carry something heavy up the stairs. Wishful thinking? Maybe, but I'll think the better of them until they prove me wrong.

More often than not when I open the door for people in general (men or women) I get the feeling that they're wondering what I'm doing.

Many reach out to hold the door as if I'll let it go as they're about to walk thru.

It's the busiest time of year in our little shop and I've got a nasty throat infection. Luckily today I felt a lot better than yesterday (my day off) although I probably sounded and looked worse. I'm now at the coughing and really dry throat/mouth stage, managed to slip out during the afternoon for some cough syrup but I was too late and my voice is nearly gone, which one customer found sexy

, LOL.

One of the nice things about being sick is that you can get away with being slightly snippy with customers. After explaining to a customer (one of those "yes, but" customers) why a front plate of brand A doesn't fit on a dimmer switch made by brand B he told me: "You know a lot about dimmers....for a woman". Usually I ignore those types of remarks but today I couldn't and told him that as a man he didn't seem to know a lot about that sort of stuff. The other customer waiting nearly died laughing and I got what I wanted: he'll bring the front plate and old, broken, dimmer switch so we can see if we can get the right one.

I don't think it's that, at least not where I live, it's just the way people behave towards each other. I had a customer last Saturday who got mad because I let him wait half a minute longer so I could open the door for a woman with a buggy who I just helped. I also notice that a lot of shop assistants and cashiers are very surprised when I thank them for helping me and wishing them a nice day/weekend/holidays. But then again it isn't surprising, seeing how many of my own customers don't have the decency to say "hello" back when I greet them before asking them if I can help them.

I was told by one of my cashiers (it was a night I was working Customer Service and was, therefore, technically her boss for the night), that she really appreciated me because I was the only person who works Service Desk that takes the time to thank her for a good job. I asked one of the other Customer Service associates about it, and she said, "Yeah, you probably really are the only one who does that!" That's just sad....

I'm about as independent and liberated as they come, and I still appreciate and thank someone that opens doors for me. I also appreciate going out with a man who holds a chair for me. he is honoring ME!

Some idiot was considerate but smug as he read about people with computer viruses.

And then he got his in triplicate!

Every once in a while I'll check my internet activity. Three days ago I noticed that it was a bit too active. That was three days ago.

Something had turned off my favorite antivirus Avast and set the firewall, Comodo, to let it all pass in and out.

I know, I know. I should switch to Linux. Linux has no viruses.

I have to work in the real world. The people I do work for (universities, military, corporate 1000, etc.) use Windows in their day to day business.

Side rant.

It's amazing how many people have an unthinking, irrational hated of Microsoft.

When MS was working out of a house and small, everybody loved them. They got real big & everybody hates them.

Kids born in the last 20 - 30 years don't even think of it, they just hate "Big Business". Microsoft is "Big Business" and therefore bad.

The same thing would have happened if their product was Apple or Linux OS/software.

In fact it looks like Apple is getting big enough to draw that kind of knee jerk reaction too.

It's amazing how some really smart people can be so childish and stupid.

I think that the ones who get bent out of shape are probably less well centered and secure in their own minds than you are.

Not so fast, said the diehard Linux user. There are rootkits and crapware out there for *nix-based (that means Apple too) operating systems; our anti-crapware apps just happen to be open-source

Seriously though, there are viruses out there, they're just incredibly rare and require a monkey to be at the machine to give it executable permissions. Still, I have ClamAV and rkhunter installed because I'm just paranoid like that.

That's a common situation. There are ways around it; an entire industry full of them in fact. For instance, check out VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/); there's an open-source edition and one for "Personal Use & Evaluation" (meaning "it has proprietary code in it"). I run my web server and Jabber server on separate Linux installs, along with my copy of Win7 for my postgrad stuff (which I take as seriously as you take your job, I surmise). I dunno about that; there are a few zealots in every crowd but the anti-MS ranting has been pretty dull since 7 came out. In fact there seems to be an ongoing backlash against Linux with kids mainly because the latest version of their favorite game might not play on it; Linux is for adults to do work and boring stuff. My wife's daughter is in her early 20s and has tried all 3; she jokes with me about how she doesn't like Mac or Linux but she admits that it's really all about how she can do what she wants to do in Windows better than the others. Co-workers of mine in the same age group you mention are pretty ambivalent about the whole thing as well, unless something breaks. When a Windows box is properly maintained, it's entirely capable of doing what many people need it to do. This from someone who swears by Linux and got his start on an Apple IIe somewhere around the Middle Ages.

Is Apple drawing the reaction? Apple is a company. Steve Jobs is a jerk. Works the same way with MS/Steve Ballmer, Oracle/Larry Ellison, or even Canonical/Mark Shuttleworth (who appears to be doing his level-best to distance Ubuntu from any Linux connection whatsoever). That's where I draw the line; you may see it differently. I never saw Bill Gates as evil or greedy or whatever. He did, however, have a fatal flaw: He tried to make an idiot-proof OS. The guy was (and is) smart. Ballmer, on the other hand, doesn't appear to have done anything right other than not driving MS into bankruptcy.

I don't understand why folks put up with all that trouble.

Get a separate drive (not a partition on your C drive) for ALL saved data. Put nothing on your C drive other than the operating system and applications. Every time you save something it should be to that external dive/drives. (I have five externals connected.) Absolutely NO DATA gets saved to the C drive.

After a fresh install, make a image copy of the C Drive with apps and registry and store that separately.

If you run into a virus that disables your machine don't bother fighting, tearing out your hair, and getting frustrated. Simply re-format the C drive, install your OS, and copy over your saved image. All it takes is a bootable CD with your OS on it. You are right back to having a clean computer with no loss of programs or data, and it all takes less than an hour.

I run Bitware AV, Malwarebytes Antimalware, (both scanned every night and set for real-time protection,) behind Zone Alarm Pro. Stuff still gets through now and then. After a couple of times doing it the hard way, I began this method. I prefer an easy hour over a hair pulling day and a half.

I hide behind Eset Smart Security for almost 3 years now and I never had a virus problem, or i never knew about it. I also have my firewall on "manual", so I create the rules for every program. It is a little extra work, but it definitely pays off.
the separate linux for browsing is a very interesting idea, i might try this for my parents and little sister

Spoiler: Other signs of a virus infection. You have a problem when try to update your virus definitions. You are unable to even connect to other antivirus web pages. Very high hard disk activity Slow computer. Restated in Safe Mode, ran some online A/V (antivirus) programs. After detecting and removing 3 viruses my computer refused to boot. Great. In went the Windows 7 DVD and I did a repair. Boots, but bad logon. Password straightened out with Trinity. Computer starts , and I can log on. Internet activity still too high. I noticed that the updated A/V program stalls for about 2 minutes on a file that isn't all that large, and then goes on to completion. Can't delete file, can't move it. Just simply can't do anything with it. Restart for the 200th time (or was it 300th?) in Safe Mode and now I can delete all the files in the folder (along with the folder). I run CCleaner on the registry. Can't connect to any A/V websites (or if I can connect in Safe Mode I can't run it in Safe Mode). I delete a bad "hosts" file. I'm now able to download a new A/V program and run it. Delete that one, install another and run it. Restart Windows and download another A/V program, run that one too. Delete that one, install another one and run that. The virus that caused the problem seems to be gone now. Hard disk & internet activity is back to normal. The only problem is that so many infected files were removed that the computer is acting strange. DVD/CD is read only - all blank disks are tagged as full, Windows "Gadgets" no longer work, FireFox is unuseable, etc. Luckily I can do a "Windows upgrade" from the origional DVD to restore the bad/missing files. Everything is back to normal & I still have all my programs and documents. Short story part.
