I'm really happy for them! Perhaps it has more to do with me and my English than with the book itself... I don't know.

It has been more than a few years (41) but I still recall mine. The good one was Sgt Young.

The other ....

We arrived from the airport and bus ride at midnight. In our bunks at one am.

4:00 am.

Lights on.

"My name is Sgt (pronunciation) Jow (pronunciation)! J. - A. - U. - C. - H."

"NOBODY WILL CALL ME SGT JOCK!"

Lights out.

You got to sleep the first night ?! ....

I'll never forget our heavy, he used to take these pills (not sure if they were real or not) but he'd stop what we were all doing, take out this little bottle of pills and say "now recruits, my doctor told me to take these pills when I started getting upset..." We used to have nightmares about what would happen if ever forgot his pills *shudder*

So...I bought my husband a tool box (One of those big red ones) that must have weighed about 60lbs. Last night I needed to get it into my apartment from my van before he got home. I was hoping one of the maintenance guys were around with a dolly but no such luck. I decided to use my shopping buggy risking that the weight on top of it might collapse the thing.

I brought the buggy down to the van with my kids and there were 2 men standing outside the door talking. Now, I'm 5'2" and about 100lbs, usually less. My van is right across from the front door of the building. It took me a good 5 minutes to get the box on top of the cart with the help of my wonderful, strong, 7 year old boy. Then we had to get the thing across the driveway and up 2 steps. OMG that thing was HEAVY! All the while these 2 strong looking men (holding their hockey equipment, so I know there was nothing wrong with them) just stood there watching me struggle to get this thing inside. Didn't even offer to open the door for me.

This morning I woke up and took a breath, and thought I was going to die! I pulled a muscle in my back so bad that I could cry right now. It's swollen right down the side of my back.

So I ask: What happened to chivalry? How can you stand there and watch a tiny woman struggle for almost 10 minutes and not offer any help? Why?

And no, I did not ask. I have issues with asking people for help. I hate asking anybody for anything so I avoid it as much as possible.

That's terrible - sorry about your back, I think you're supposed to do ice the first day then heat after that. No chivalry is not dead and you shouldn't have to ask!! It sounds like a couple of losers that had no common decency. I'm all for equal rights and women's lib and everything but I'll ask anyone (male or female) if they need help and if some is obviously having trouble I'll just step in and help anyway.

Oh, I'm so sorry! We would just say around here that their mama must not have raised them right!

I must say that there is some advantage to living in the deep South when it comes to that sort of thing. Very rarely does somebody go through a door without holding it for the next person, and very rarely do you see an able-bodied person refuse to give up their seat to someone less able, at least in my community. Now since this is a pretty high-crime area, that same person may mug you once you get out the door, but by golly he will carry the box for you first, and hold the door until you are through it! Mamas and grandmamas take a hard line on the courtesy thing here. I hope your back gets better soon, and that the tool chest is much appreciated on Christmas morning!

Thanks Betty, even though it hurts to laugh! He damn well better appreciate it or I'll throw it off the balcony, even if it tears every muscle in back.

@Dsvick: Thanks, it's good to know that at least there are a few good men left! I'll do the cold/hot remedy, hopefully it works.

I answer, womens lib happened. Guy's don't want to just go "help" women lest they get a speech about how strong and awesome women are.

I ask, why didn't you ask. I'm sure they would have helped you if you did.

Oh wait, is this an episode of "what would you do"? Plenty of guys offered to help the hot girl steal a bike... everyone ignored the white teen and most called the cops on the African teen.

I don't like asking for help, it's just the way I am. It shouldn't matter if I'm a woman. Even if I was dude that seemed to be struggling with a heavy object I think it's rude to not help a fellow human being out. What's wrong with that? I would do it for anyone else. My husband and I have stopped to help many people in my neighbourhood that needed a boost, tire change or needed to push their car off the road because it broke down. I hold the door open for anyone bringing in groceries, furniture, etc. It's just being a good human being. Just my opinion of course
