How do I get 1.8?
My new kobo wifi is running firmware 1.7.4 and I can't figure out how to get to 1.8. Shouldn't the kobo check for an upgrade when I connect the wifi? I do not run the "desktop" software because I do not use Microsoft Windows or Apple's OSX. So far, calibre appears to do everything I need. So if I'm not using the native software supplied by kobo, how will I get the firmware upgraded to 1.8? I also do not have a SD card with me at this time.
Many thanks in advance. |

I'm pretty sure there is no new update for the wifi Kobo. This 1.8.1 release is for the original Kobos to give them most of the functionality of the wifi Kobo. Somebody will have to invent a numbering scheme to keep the two series straight.

Agreed - Appending an "O" or a "W" to the release Version would be great! |

I don't understand why Kobo doesn't post the devices firmware and the desktop application version numbers and changes that are made for each version on their website as most other manufacturers do.

I would like to post a simple question, once again, hoping to get a straightforward answer from someone in Kobo company itself:
How do I know when 1.8, or whatever, is available for my Kobo (which I bought the first week it came out at Chapters); second part of the question would be, how do I get at said release? I bought my Kobo in May, I have been pleased with it, have no real problems, but I would like to see improvements (which have already been acted upon with 1.8, from what I can gather). I did the 1.4 upgrade, without problems, but for the life of me I cannot remember where I started! I have been looking daily at parts of this forum for about 4 months now, as the endless discussions about the next version proceeded. I use Calibre and ADE and have downloaded free books from the various places, including a public library. I have not purchased any books. I have logged into KOBOBOOKS.COM and I have the kobo.exe on my computer. I signed up. Yet, when I log in, I see nothing to indicate anything about a firmware release - it seems to only be a bookstore thing. I do not "sync" anything, either, and I am not sure why I would ever care to do so - I download a book or two, read it, delete it, etc. |

DeerSlayer: this may not be the best place to address a question to the Kobo team. You may have noticed there are quite a LOT of posts in the last few days and the chances of it being seen are much lower than usual.
The 1.8 upgrade is done via the desktop application. Apparently there is something like a 25% chance that your desktop app will get the notice of the new version each time, to avoid stressing the servers. Eventually you will get notified. I, impatient, went to the Kobo website (http://www.kobobooks.com/desktop) and got the desktop software update directly and installed it. When I connected my Kobo, the upgrade happened, with a confirmation dialog. I can't remember if I clicked Sync to get the dialog requesting permission to upgrade or if it just happened when it was plugged in. For my ADE to work I reset the Kobo to factory defaults and reauthorize it, but I don't think everyone had to do that. (If you have questions for Kobo, there are a few ways: PM one of their reps on MR, call the customer support line, go to the Customer Care website (http://kobo.zendesk.com/anonymous_requests/new), or use the support tab in Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/kobo#!/kobo?v=app_227698805184. Better than a generic post in MR) |

Instructions on how to get the update for the original kobo has been pretty well documented here. Taming, who's been helping with the beta testing, has a great post here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=111310 and if you don't want to use the kobo software, you can follow JCKobo's (he's a project manager with kobo) instructions here. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=111475 Just keep in mind that if you update your firmware, then you will have problems with Calibre until an update is rolled out for that app. |

The OP has Kobo WiFi, this update does NOT apply to WiFi users. WiFi users will be offered the new desktop (which is much improved in a behind the scene way) when the WiFI unit is synced to the desktop via USB. If there are any device updates, they also will be installed at that time. There have been a couple of small software updates since the Kobo WiFi's release.

The software didn't update for me that way; I've actually started to keep the kobo software setup exe from the kobo itself on my desktop which I'll run every so often to see if there's an update as it's more of a kobo download manager, grabbing the most recent version their online repository ![]() Last edited by Psyke; 12-16-2010 at 12:13 PM. Well, I just updated a brand new WiFi reader that way. I know it didn't work for me either on my other WiFi reader until now. I think this might be one of the features of the new desktop. I will have to check with Kobo staff to confirm this.

This is regarding the Desktop software, not the firmware. On the kobo Wifi, the desktop software setup app (Sorry, don't have the exact name), is actually a download manager that goes to a kobo online repository to grab a copy of the software and downloads it before installing it. This is usually the most up to date version available. (minus what may be available to beta testers) If you go to the kobo site itself to download the desktop app, it is (or at least was..it's been a couple version since I downloaded the package from there), it's a complete package of whatever version they have posted, which is not always the most current (ie - it might take a couple hours/days before the newest version is posted officially). If there is a firmware version for your particular kobo, you should be prompted to install it when you plug your kobo into your PC and start your desktop software (the most current version, and you may need to do a book update/device sync), or, in the case of the kobo wifi, you should be prompted if you connect wirelessly to the store and update your library. This has been the two ways I've gotten my firmware updates for the 3 kobo's I currently have, and expect the same delivery when the next firmware is released for the wifi version, whenever that may be. Again, I wish Kobo would show versions of their software. It would be so easy for them to do that. ltr |
