Firmware update for 950

Firmware 2.0.00.11300 was recently released. It will automatically ask you to update if you are connected via wifi. Not sure about 3G. Hopefully this is a sign that Sony is actually working on improving the new readers and will release more updates in the future unlike past products (Not one update for the PRS-900!). Keep your fingers crossed.

Here is what is added with this firmware.

Quote:
What does this do?

To improve the overall reading experience and to provide the new features listed below, this utility updates the PRS-950 system software to version 2.0.00.11300.

* Purchased Content
Adds a "Purchased Content" icon to the Applications screen to allow you to easily access previously Purchased Content via your Sony Reader™ Store account and download it directly to your PRS-950.
* Reader Store Notifications
Receive recommendations from the Reader Store delivered to the Reader Home screen.
Note: The option to receive notifications can be turned off in the General Settings menu.
* Page Sync
Synchronizes reading information such as bookmarks, highlights and text notes between two or more Reader Daily Edition™ (PRS-950) devices.
Notes:
o To start using the sync function, turn on Page Sync in the Application Preferences screen.
o Synchronizing across your smart phone devices with applications such as Reader™ for iPhone® will be coming soon.
* Capture Screenshot
Take screenshots of the Open Browser or Handwriting Viewer screens and save them as picture (jpeg) files which you can view in the Pictures application. You can also set a captured screenshot as your Standby Image.
* Hyperlink
Tap a link within text to jump to the web page via Wi-Fi®.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see anything in that update that makes we want to run the risk of doing a version update.

Are there other reasons to do the update?

Somebody will have to install the update and post if there is anything else new. These look to all be related to Wi-fi features. So if you don't use Wi-fi, then maybe it's not of great benefit to you. I don't have time to try it out this morning and will have to wait until later.

The most important one to me is that hyperlinks will work now. Hooray!!!!

Purchased Content: It sounds equivalent to the Kindle's Archived Items list. It means you don't have to go to the Reader Store and search through buried menus on your account page to find your previously purchased content to download. Now you can see it through the 950 Applications Menu. Not a big deal to me. I am one of those people who likes to keep their entire book collection on their ereader.

Capture Screenshot of Handwriting Application as JPG is nice. Before you had to do some conversion steps to view your handwritten notes and save them to your hard-drive.

Page Sync is much needed if it can sync between the 950 and my iPhone once the mobile apps are released.

I have to agree with @petercreasey in that this seems like a really lackluster update. Most of the items mentioned are for Sony and not for us. Like I want those idiots to send me spam on my 950! I get too much Sony spam via email.

The link jump to the Internet might appeal to some, but I don't surf the web via my 950--not a pleasant experience. But then again I bought it to read on and not to be a Swiss Army Knife of electronics.

The update is not being distributed over 3G, just wi-fi.

Does the firmware update affect contrast of the text, the darkness of the letters?

Does it affect the font - pixelization around the edges of some letters?

total BS update. most "features" they're are for nothing more than Sony itself.

how about something as elementary as Landscape orientation for web browser?

There's nothing here that looks particularly great (for me), but I do hope that it's a sign of things to come. Maybe Sony has realized that they need to pay attention to user experience even after a reader is sold.

I just upgraded -- everything seems the same (I don't use the wifi much). Had to use wifi -- I downloaded the Mac updater, but couldn't get it to recognize the reader. Only took a few minutes to download and update via the built-in wifi.

Funny! This reminds me of every time the playstation3 gets an update. Everyone chimes in complaining that the update is BS because the particular feature they want wasnt addressed. Cant we agree that this update, ANY update, is a step in the right direction? I would rather have small incremental updates every now and then as opposed to no updates at all.
