@KennyC
Remember that a minor ailment that starts off as a tickle in the throat then brings on coughing and moves into the lungs can develop into something more serious. Chicken soup and medications are good but whatever else you do, remember: Don't breath on me. ![]() |

Here goes a rough one... Smoking.
I was a long time smoker myself. 43 years at a pack and a half a day. I never realized just how badly that could make a place smell until I stopped smoking and my nose returned to normal. I won't complain about second-hand smoke; our environment is simply too messed up to worry about a little more from cigarettes. But the smell! ![]() We went to a nice restaurant for lunch yesterday. In Japan, many restaurants, if they aren't completely no-smoking, have separate smoking sections. These days the non-smoking sections fill up quickly so by the time we got there there were no tables available except in the smoking section. That room was completely empty so I thought, 'what the hell, let's sit there.' We lasted less than five minutes. It was like sitting in an ashtray. Fortunately just at that time a table emptied in the non-smoking section and we were able to move. I couldn't take any more. I'm amazed at how oblivious to this smell I was as a smoker. I was completely unaware, despite people telling me, that is was as vile as it is. Here was a large dinning room, with no one currently smoking, that smelled so badly that we needed to leave. And I was completely unaware of how badly smokers themselves smell! Frankly, I'm amazed that I was able to get dates with non-smoking women when I was a smoker. They must have had sinus trouble! I'll never tell someone not to smoke. I know how I felt when someone did that to me when I was a smoker. I will say that anyone who comes near you will immediately know that you are a smoker without needing to see you smoke. Stitchawl |

Yeah! I just stopped (2 months today) and I feel enormously relieved by not being a slave of it anymore. Wife still does and I see how her time at home is fragmented by the need to go out for a cigarette.
When we had the baby we had the house interior completely repainted and the two cars steam cleaned. So the house has been liberated. And the baby has not been affected, apparently (Wife reduced to almost nothing while pregnant and breast feeding). I am not disturbed by secondary smoke yet. The smell of smokers' spaces has always disturbed me, in airports for instance, not so much in restaurants which I do not frequent much and if, I tend to go to outside spaces. I remember the smoker place in St.Luis where I often changed plane going to Austin to see my brother in law when I went to Texas for business, it was like true hell, not so much the smoke in the air but the smell itself. Apparently there is this punishing attitude by who runs these things. I am sure it would be quite easy to avoid it, with more frequent cleaning. But instead of letting that smokers smoke in peace, it is preferred to make it hard for them to smoke. Because they cost they say. Yeah, they cost and they pay taxes and they pay taxes on their tobacco. Also idiocy and intolerance costs. Everything costs. My two friends in the train, they told me that I was smelling like a pig and that the smell disappeared in about a week. The reason I stopped smoking is that I felt bad about being serf and about annoying people around me. Than I found a very good motivation that helped me to take the first and only step. |

The annoyance, now, is the gauntlet of smokers one has to brush past in order to enter/exit shops/pubs etc .... even the hospital!

There are several outdoor areas in Kyoto that are designated as non-smoking. I'm not talking about parks or malls, but regular streets! They have put up small smoking shelters off the side streets for those needing to smoke. As a smoker I would have been offended by that. Indoors, cigarette smoke coats surfaces with a thick and sticky resin which holds the smell, which is why despite air cleaners, smoking areas still smell so badly. When a chain-smoking neighbor moved out of her apartment, I watched as a professional cleaning service was called in to actually scour the walls and ceiling. They were a shade of yellow-brown when she left, and white when the cleaning service was finished...
