Actually you don't need to root to use Overdrive. Check your local library and see if they have digital books. You can search for a local library here:
http://search.overdrive.com/

Then you just need to authorize your NC with Adobe Digital Editions (free software from Adobe). That's because the library books are DRM-protected using ADE encryption. It is a good idea to authorize your NC with ADE anyway because then you can buy books from other sources besides BN such as Borders, Sony, booksonboard, etc. You just download the books from the library (or other ebookstore) and sideload via USB cable to your NC. It is a better method because then the book can be read within the Nook's Book Viewer which has more features (color themes / annotations / dictionary) than the Overdrive app. The Overdrive app book viewer is very basic. However, it is a good way to get library books and read them if you are away from your computer. That's the advantage of the app.

oh. thank you. now how do i "authorize your NC with Adobe Digital Editions"?

*figured it out...

When I go to my library's site, I only see the option to put the book on hold. Do I need to wait for someone to "return" it in order to download it? I assumed online would be instantly available. Am I missing something?

Your library purchases a copy of the book just like you would so they don't have unlimited copies to distribute even though it's digital media. If you click on the books detailed information page, it should tell you how many copies the library has, how many are available and how many others are waiting in line. You can put the book on hold, and then they will send you an email when it is available. If you want to try a book immediately, then you need to find one that says "Add to Digital BookBag". Have fun now that you have discovered free books from the library. I am currently reading a library book on my Nook Color too!

I ordered a Nook Color for a gift and I have a few questions. Someone has said that they weren't able to subscribe to free trial magazines/newspapers or lost the subscriptions after rooting it. After rooting it, can you buy books and subscribe to magazines/newspapers like you normally can on a non rooted device? Is the in store feature the only ability you lose after rooting it? Thanks.

Ah.. Didn't think of that. It's been ages since I've been in a library.

Thank you for the help. I was able to find one pdf book available and get it to the NC. This is my first pdf book so I don't know if this is the norm for all pdf's but the margins are 1.5 inches around and doesn't adjust too well with the different font sizes. And it seems a lot of the books are already out.

Yes, that is quite typical of PDF's, regardless of whether it comes from the library or another source. I recommend that you stick to EPUB's rather than PDF's whenever there is an option. The EPUB files are much better formatted and easier to read.

Some libraries have better selections than others. It is not uncommon to have waits, especially for bestsellers. Usually the waits go quick because you can return the book before the expiration date and often people are courteous enough to do that when they know it's a popular one. At least the books are free, and I don't even have to leave my house or worry about late fees.

question on rooting.

Is the microsd card reusable on the NC after you use it for the rooting software? Do I need to get a "throw away" microsd card as well?

You need to remove the partion of what was used to root. A simple format of the card will not work.

Apps That Wont Work Because They Need Location Services

There are some apps (like Twitter, TweetDeck, Weather Channel) that won't install or function properly without location services. The error message is INSTALL_FAILED_MISSING_SHARED_LIBRARY.

In a nutshell, two Google map files need to be pushed to the NC. Here are the directions. Once you do this you're good to go.

Thanks. I couldn't get windows or linux to recognize the card to delete the partition but GPartEd did the trick.

Another question though.. Is there a way to uninstall a package?

You can use Astro File Manager to uninstall apps.

http://www.freewarelovers.com/androi...o-file-manager

Within Astro (bring up the menu) click on "Tools", then "Application Manager/Backup"

It will list all of the installed apps. Select which app what you want to uninstall. Then select "Uninstall".

Actually, it's the astro file manager that I wanted to remove.
I found advanced task manager that does the job of this and advanced task killer which I also removed.
