I'm not terribly fond of the idea of a 10" tablet. While they seem good, they're really not. Once you get above 7", you're starting into netbook territory. And once you get above 10", you're into laptop territory. Honestly, if I want to use something that's over 7", I'll just go grab the equivalent hardware that already exists. For one, it's cheaper. Two, it does a heck of a lot more. Sure, 10" is awesome if you're reading ebooks or watching video, but if I'm carrying a tablet, I want to surf the web. Think of Nokia's n8xx series. They were awesome for exactly that.

My perfect tablet would be 7", come with a stylus, and be primarily focused towards multimedia (ie, movies and music/audiobooks), ebooks, and web surfing. One thing I don't want on my unit is 3G. For one, it locks you into a single phone network, which sucks beyond words. (Go look up information on vendor lock-in on the cellular networks. It's not a pretty picture. It's honestly as bad, if not worse than DRM.) Two, it's just easier to tether off your phone than have the device do 3G on its own. And finally three, 3G is a battery eater. So avoid it like the plague.

Also, I like resistive screens over capacitive. Why? Think back about my comment regarding the stylus. I'm not likely to have my fingers smeared all over my screen. I'm a neat freak when it comes to screens, and fingerprints or any kind of dirt on a screen drives me nuts. That's one of many reasons I prefer a stylus, and resistive screens. Now if you're going to be knuckle deep into your screen with all your fingers, that's a whole other thing. I however won't be, and thus I don't need it. Sadly though, if you put me into a room full of people, my argument would probably lose at a staggering rate of 99 out of every 100.

I was very disappointed by this whole launch debacle so I just went and bought an PB IQ. If the Adam turns out well next year maybe I'll get it.

It sounds like they've decided that their tablet is a lemon, and if you plan to return it, complain, or try to get your warranty honored, they'll sock you to the wall on it. Honestly, if they're going to do that, then I plan to reject my review unit when they finally offer it. No company that screws its customers right out of the box deserves any kind of press from me, period.

If you have not heard that then you have not followed their development, nor the claims that the OLPC cost would go down as a result.

What with airfare and not one beer would cost me a bit.

Make that 98 of of every 100 (as I'm with you all the way!)

It was cold here, the last week. And the mobile providers noticed a drop in the use of smartphones. One person said it was because of people holding their hands in their pockets. I think it's because you cannot handle a capacitive screen with gloves... When I was outside waiting for my ride home, I read on my PDA. And I could even annotate, with my gloves on, because I can use a stylus... (ok, with gloves, I wouldn't want to try to write a book, but for the less-dexterity required functions, it works perfectly).

I do want a 10" however. And I'd prefer a tablet. Not for general reading, because 7" is much better for that. But for the reading of comic books, some internet and mobile photo album...

I do like this Adam. Except the price and OS. I want a full OS on a tablet, not a mobile OS. Or the price should go about $200 down.

Kevinp, I'm going out on a limb here. Tone is notoriously difficult to read in Internet discussions, but the lack of smileys in your post make me interpret yours as a mixture of irony and bitterness. And I'm going to counter with a bit of seriousness, and you're not going to like it: Yes, average Norwegians has more money than average Americans. I am a very average Norwegiean. Together with my wife I have a yearly income of around $120 000. A regular income for an industrial worker is $60 000. And the reason for that is that we live in what especially Republicans call a socialist state, but what we call a social democratic state. Because the average CEO salary in a large Norwegian company is around $200 000, not ten times that like in the USA. The differences are very small compared to the US in all walks of life. Yes, we have the odd stock broker making millions of dollars, but I would guess that you could count them on your fingers and toes. The unions are basically more powerful than any CEO.

We also pay more tax than you (and yes, Sweetpea, more for beer! ) but all education and necessary medical expenses (which covers just about everything except for plastic surgery just to look good if there isn't a medical condition that makes it necessary) are free. And we have a much stricter control over the financial sector something again especially your Republicans say is counter productive. Maybe, but that means that we were almost unaffected by the financial crisis. The unemployment rate in Norway is higher than usuall at the moment, but only slight. And "higher than usual" here means around 3.5 %, which also means that the average Norwegian has more money. Housing is cheaper in Norway, but one thing is a lot more expensive: Cars and gasoline. Again because of the social democratic leadership, because they want to keep emissions down, so we pay around 8 dollars per gallon, drive as little as possible and most people drive around in ten year old cars. Which would probably lead to a bloody revolt in the US, especially in the southern states.

Oh yes, finally we have oil, but the US isn't short on natural resources either. It's just that your wise, free enterprise loving leadership have decided to spend billions of dollars on wars to stop imaginary weapons of mass destructions (I actually think that Afghanistan was necessary - Norway is there with a contingent of special forces, including Norwegian version of Navy SEALS that actually are considered one of the best special forces in the world, but Iraq was a joke where your previous monkey brained president was lead by big business and a war mongering vice president) and lots of idiotic counter terrorism measures that doesn't really work but erodes privacy (even though MacDonald's kill a thousand times more people in the US then al-Quaida will ever manage to) and propping up a failing state in the Middle East (Israel would probably make peace with the palestinians within two months if the US could break free of the christian right and other lobby groups and just stop paying them money) and so on, and so on.

And if you from this tirade are deducing that I am a left extremist, you're wrong. I'm very much in the conservative camp here in Norway, but conservative in Norway means a bit to the left of the liberal Democrats camp in the US. I would elect John Stewart for president if I could! Don't get me wrong, I've been to the US several times, I drive a Chevy Suburban (converted to LPG because that's 1/3 of the gasoline price since it pollutes a lot less) and have an Oldsmobile Starfire '78 (which I'm working on getting a Buick V6 Turbo engine into - bought on eBay from Michigan). But I do think that big business is running too much in the US, and you have seen what that leads to.

OK, I'm going to put my flameproof PJ's on now, I'm sure I will need it. I hope I will not be chased from the forum with a stick, though...

HI all,

I would like to introduce some consideration.

I will wait the first video review and then I ll probably buy.
the stylus and the gloves is an issue, but I am resolving putting my thumb outside the gloves, is not elegant and it freeze, but I am reading with my hd2 with the marvellous ezpdfreader.

Then also if it is true that a netbook can do more things(but I love android to other op systems) is usually heavy to carry on in comparison with a tablet, that is just screen.
I mean I ll buy a notion ink, or immediate follower just because of the reduct weight and space. Then the notebook except for few models that are matte( as my great 1,3kg msiwind), you cannot paradoxically use them in the open spaces?!?

TO be honest the only think I am worried is another, will the adam have inbuilt dictionary to look up pressing a words, will permit to build table of contents? in other words did the smart indian ceo imagine a cool inbuilt app that makes adam similar to an ipad that can read in the open air?
To be honest the actual software for pdf in droid does not permit to edit bookmarks, table contents in a satisfactory way as far as I know. SO the notion ceo should think about an inbuilt app that makes possible to enjoy a pdf on 10inches building a kind of foxit reader for tablet!!!

Wow that's even worse than I suspected, no way in heck would I give that company my credit card number. EVER!

Startup glitches are one thing. Complete incompetence and shady ever-changing terms and conditions are quite another. I'm disappointed but I'll wait for more reputable companies to provide similar offerings.

I've been following the Adam blog since last CES. They're a new start-up and have to deal with a lot of new laws and conventions, so I'm also willing to cut them enough slack to wait and see. I could have pre-ordered but I held off because no matter how shiny-looking their product is I want a hands-on review before I spend over $500 plus shipping on anything. Especially if it's made by a company with no track record in manufacturing or distribution and their inexperience has made the release more than problematic. I still may get one, like the folks at androidpolice.com, I hope they prove it's a great product.

For now, I'm giving my Witstech A81 away and I doubt I'll ever buy direct from China again. Unfulfilled promises galore and potential they barely scratched. I'll probably spring for the new Archos 70 which has Android 2.2 now. They've been making PMPs for years and the OS has a variety of e-reader programs available and I think 7" is a better form factor for casual use than 10". Maybe Apple or Notion Ink will take note of the Galaxy Tab's success and try to steal some of their thunder.

I see what Android Police is writing, but I think it's mostly startup difficulties. I actually prefer a short warranty (that warranty is very much like what's common in Norway) to the US style warranties warning you that you should not eat your new tablet, and that the warranty will be void if you put it in front of an elephant on a unicycle... The lawyers in the US are totally crazy!

Don't forget about not putting it with the dog in the microwave!

It has its good sides and it can have its bad sides. But I'm with nonanon on this one. If I decided to buy something like this, I'd wait till the first real reviews where out there.

You may well laugh.

A friend of mine who's a teacher had a young lady in her sixth form class (17 y/o) who had killed her pet hamster because it was shivering from the cold, so she put it in the microwave for a couple of minutes.
