Anyway, new day and I've given up the frustration and have moved directly to the laughing hysterically stage. ![]() I took the Kobo back. Chapters was exceptional and exchanged it readily when they heard my story. The new one is freezing after reading only a few pages. I've done the paperclip reboot a couple of times and now I've noticed that it will come back just by plugging it in but then it froze in the middle of a page turn. The battery indicator shows full charge in Kobo display but when it's plugged in I'm not always getting the red or blue indicator light to tell me it's charge status. I'm not getting any notifications of a low battery either. It's not keeping my bookmarks and doesn't go to sleep, it freezes instead. sigh, now I"m thinking what are the chances that I got 2 malfunctioning Kobos? So software is the next suspect. Could something corrupt in my library be causing this? Should I try a previous version of Calibre - prior to 7.26 ? Should I scrap my Library and reset the device and rebuild the library? Any ideas of things I can try? Windows 7 64 bit Calibre 0.7.32 I have only used the KoboDesktop to see if it sees the device and I only use ADE to authorize it. Other than that I use Calibre to manage all content. Joyful |

The same behaviours continue (on the new Kobo that I just got via exchange at Chapters).
I can read a few pages and then it freezes or I've had it reboot on it's own when I'm reading. The only way to read continuously is to leave it plugged in. The battery shows a full charge. It's now frozen in the middle of a page turn. Trying to reboot it via the paperclip trick isn't working. When I plug it in it reboots and shows a full charge. Anyone have any ideas because I'm at a total loss here. Joyful Last edited by Joyful; 12-07-2010 at 04:52 PM. |

Is it the books maybe? Can you share what you are reading and where it is from...

my guess it is in the books themselves or your library. I would reset my kobo to factory adn load only one book onto it. Preferably one you bought from kobo or at least one you are fairly sure will work and see if it happens if it is ok then load one that you already have had trouble with and see if the behaviour is repeated if it is you will know that it is that book.

Are you using USB port on a computer to charge it? Have you tried charging it on a different computer or with a cell phone charger? Weird that it's not showing a light at all when you have it plugged in. Others have discussed issues with USB ports sometimes. I assume you were selecting "charge and keep reading" option on the Kobo itself after plugging it in since you were able to read.

I thought it might be books also so I did a factory reset and haven't loaded any books and the same behaviour occurs while reading one of the pre-loaded books.
Right now it has gone to sleep, which it doesn't usually do but it's frozen there. I'll try to recharge it via my other computer or using my iPhone wall plug recharging thingie. I'll also move my Calibre library folder off of my C drive and onto an external and try a previous version of Calibre and basically start over. Thanks for the replies and suggestions! |

Some epubs contain just one xml file for the whole book. That
might be the very problem. Aside this, I assume you have to remove db first to have virgin reader. Just follow sticky. |

I charged it for 3 hours using a my iPhone charger and did a factory reset.
Attached it to the computer and got the message that the software on Kobo was upgrading. I noticed this message the last 2 or 3 times I did the reset so I assume that's normal. Went into settings to set the date, etc. then without loading anything onto it I tried to read one of the preloaded books. I was able to read a few pages but then it froze. So I'm assuming this can't be a Calibre problem if I didn't load anything onto it from Calibre. In fact I didn't even let Windows see it, I chose "Keep Reading" and unplugged it. zoran, the stickie topic with the instructions for removing the db are for 1.4 on the original Kobo. I have the WiFi with 1.7 and followed the instructions from the Kobo rep further on in that thread (factory reset). Joyful |

Well it certainly seems that you have done a decent job of trouble shooting. Perhaps the store you got yours at has a bad batch??? Also kudos for sticking it out as long as you have. My Kobo experience has been nothing but good. I got one of the first ones in my area (three actually if you count my moms and my wifes) and even though the first generation had some bugs to work around they have all been stellar. in fact I just yesterday upgraded to the 1.4 firmware in anticipation of 1.5 firmware.
Anyway I hope you get yours figured out so you can sit down and enjoy a good book |

My latest update.
I exchanged the Kobo today for another Wifi version. This one has software version 1.7.1 on it. (The other 2 Wifi Kobos I had were version 1.7) I've noticed a couple of different things about this one from my 2 previous ones. 1).The D-button click is very loud. Louder even than the one on my original Kobo. Strange as it was my understanding that they made the click softer on the Wifi Kobo because of the complaints they got. 2).The second thing is that I can only get it to turn one page at a time. On my previous WiFi's, the Kobo would turn multiple pages if I clicked on the button multiple times (in a short period of time). Even my original version Kobo will turn 2 pages with 2 quick clicks. If this is a function of the upgraded software (from 1.7 to 1.7.1) it seems a step backward to me. It almost feels like Kobo has been rushing these out and the quality control is lacking. This one seems like a hybrid between the original and the Wifi. Ironically the Wifi feature is the one feature I don't care about. I'm disappointed because there are a lot of things I like about the Kobo and why I chose it in the first place. Anyone have a Wifi Kobo and can share how their's is in comparison to mine? edited to say that I got the Kobo to do the multiple page turn thing once but now I can't seem to reproduce that. The single page turn seems to be a 1.7.1 thing. I'd swear it worked the same way as the original before that. It's annoying, but bearable due to the faster page turns with wifi.

I've always been able to skip a few pages by clicking the button really fast. Sometimes up to 5 pages. Try it...you have to click it really fast though.

Not with 1.0 or 1.4 firmware. On the latest beta I can indeed get it to do two consecutive page turns. No more though. If I press the button twice or 5 times, 2 pages is the most it will advance. It's possible the WiFi has this behaviour - I haven't played with one.
