Being in a sunny place, we get our hot water from the sun. When there is no sun for 4 days or more we have to turn on the booster which means the electric element has to heat the water, rather than the sun heating the collectors.

Got it, thanks! I had a feeling it was something like that. Is the booster an 'on demand' device or does it have to run for a while and heat up a holding tank? All our hot water comes through an 'on demand' heater that only turns on when we turn on the faucet, and only heats the water that we need to use at the time.

my uncle put one of those into his house. while they are spendy to put in, they are very cheap and efficient to use. if I can ever put this place together, I'll be putting one in

The booster is an electric element in the tank (400litres) that will turn on when the thermostat tells it the water is not hot enough. The tank holds hot water. When its temperature can no longer be maintained by the sun (4 days of rain will do it) the electric element does the job. Although it does not heat as hot as the sun, it is still enough for our needs.

Interesting...
You're the second person to tell me that these systems are expensive. I bought two of them and installed them myself when we lived in Thailand. Less than $300 each, Panasonic brand, took me less than an hour to install each (an I'm no handyman,) and gave us more than enough water pressure and volume for two showers and the kitchen sink.

The other person who told me they were expensive in the US was a plumber/contractor friend who was having troubles with the water heater in his old house and wanted to change it. I wonder if they are priced differently there.

Sigh.

I still find myself fighting to promote the works of indie authors in general, and myself in particular. Though this particular forum is more progressive than most in this area, other forums and books-related sites still talk of unpublished authors as the unwashed, untalented, obnoxious and disliked scum of the literate Earth. And of course, everyone looks down on advertising, so any attempt to advertise yourself ends up in character abuse. (Even on this site, author-promoters had to be segregated away in their own thread, so as not to offend those who "can't stand all that personal hype" and seek to avoid being exposed to ads at all costs.)

I honestly don't know how I can promote myself, when any time I even raise a finger to try to promote myself, I get attacked for it. It's frustrating.

I had a tankless water heater for a while. While I liked the "idea" of it... only using electricity while water was running through it... it didn't work very well during the colder months. I think one of the elements burned out too. We went back to a traditional water tank/heater.

However, if I ever had a house built for myself I would go with tankless... but probably one for each bath room and one for the kitchen and one for the washer. This would also save money on plumbing that house because only cold water pipe needs to be run from the source to each BR/Kitchen/etc. This would also allow for no worry of how many places are trying to draw the hot water since each unit is dedicated to a single area rather than trying to have one huge unit.

Rant -The New York Times.

I was checking the news concerning taxes on books/ebooks. It's my contention that almost any reading is better than the alternative of intellectual subservience to the TV, and that low, if any, taxes on books of any kind would benefit all of us as a whole.

The New York Times was once a leader in journalism around the world. Looking at it over the past decade shows how far it has fallen. But where it has fallen to poorly written articles it, has been working hard to prefect time travel.

That's an abstract to an article that was really published in 1913. They're not using a time machine, they're using the archives.

That's what we did, more or less. As one bathroom was on the same line as the kitchen sink, it was easy enough to plumb the two together. And there was never a time when the water draw from them was simultaneous so no problems with supply. While those were used in hot tropical climate, we use the same thing here in Japan which gets cold winters (it's 4c right now) and no problems with having enough hot water for the shower. Again, bathroom and kitchen each have their own heater, one being electric and the other gas powered.
