Jon - may I ask you a question? Have you ever actually SEEN or USED a Gen3? Some of the comments you're coming out with about them are, frankly, ill-informed, disingenuous, and plain WRONG!

The Gen3 can be used in one of two modes:

1. You can shut it down completely at the end of a reading session. If you do this, it takes about 20s to restart, but you don't lose any battery power in between sessions. This is the way that I use it.

2. You can set it so it doesn't auto-shutdown, and just leave it on. In this mode, it's available for instant use, and requires a recharge about every 4-5 days.

Many people in the CyBook forum choose to use it in this 2nd mode; it's no particular burden to have to recharge every 4-5 days - this is better battery life than you'll get from an iLiad, and roughly on a par with what the Kindle will do too, I understand. In this "non shutdown" mode, library books with time-expiring DRM will work just fine.

Perhaps that answers the original question a little better than your ill-informed comment does.

Ron,
Unfortunately I can't give you any satisfying answers. Bill's announcement meant what it said - at some point in the future there will be a Sony Reader released that will be able to display ePub files and PDFs that use Adobe DRM. This hasn't happened yet, although we are working on it. Sony has not publicly released any information (that I'm aware of) on their plans for this device and if there will be any backward support for older devices. When Sony does release that information, I'll post it here.

I was all for the Cybook as I live in the UK and it is easier to get, but "if" the Sony 505 is going to support DE then I would probably get that myself (especially if it comes out in the UK).

Welcome to MobileRead, Barry Scott!

I believe I read somewhere that Mobipocket and Bookeen (the makers of the Cybook for those reading this who may not know) each have intentions to support .epub too, though how that will play out is anyone's guess.

I actually found it on ebay for £185 brand new. This was a very good price and is less than to import + duty etc.

I just really want DE support as I have lots of epub books from Feedbooks.com (what an excellent site that is) although I can download their Sony formatted ones. I would rather not buy BBeB books but I will probably grab a few or some LIT's and convert.

Depending on when this message came in from Adobe, it sounds like Sony is going to come out with yet another Reader and there's a slight possibility that the PRS-505 will be obsolete? Wow, now that's what I call a SHORT lifespan for the Reader if that's the case. I'll actually be kind of miffed if that happens.

The Adobe press release came out on June 19th -- a little over 3 months before the 505 launched. Sony assured us during the Conference Call on the 505 that they were planning to support DE on the 505 ... whenever Adobe gets around to finishing it.

So, to reassure you, nathantw, while the 505 will doubtless become obsolete eventually, it won't be quite that fast!

Whew, thank you! I actually bought two of those units (one for me and the other for my significant other) and I would have really hated if both were bricks before the middle the next year. (I know they wouldn't actually be "bricks" per say, but not able to fully utilize all the functions that more "modern" machines would be capable of.)

You can pretty much expect epub support on many different devices: Sony, Bookeen and iRex love this format and are planning future support.

What might be different is the DRM used for these epub files. It seems that Sony will support Adobe DE DRM.

I really think (may be wishful thinking, of course) that if .epub were to emerge as the de facto 'standard' e-book format, that inter-compatible DRM would probably follow fairly closely.

Well, maybe it would at least take less time to evolve than a standard format is taking.

Yes, I rather think you got a good deal there! Some of the prices on eBay are daft but that looks like a good buy.

Trying to get this thread back to original topic

I'm researching this site to try to ascertain the actual significant differences between the Cybook and the Sony 505. I'm planning to get one or the other, but this thread has seemed to wander off to a discussion of a pdf format. So, a few questions (maybe I should have started a new thread?):

Has anyone compared the number of (actual) problem issues between the two devices? (I've read and reread the wiki and the matrix several times, btw.)

I've been reading about screen blackout problems, button pressing and placement problems, warranty problems, cover problems, support problems, library listing problems, saved page problems, etc. Because I'm in the US, it might be "safer" to get a Sony, but then again, reading another long thread about support problems with Sony leads me to believe that may not be true either.

Is one or the other more "update-able"?

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.
