I have my favourite books, the bones of my library, that are like "comfort reads", I love snuggling down and re-reading them when the mood hits (Agatha Christie, PG Wodehouse, Dick Francis, Arthur Ransome,...). These are the books I lugged over to Menorca (another island in the Balearics, where I live) when I moved over there for a few years (but I left everything else except my clothes!). Other books I also re-read, but not as often. And some books are good for being read once and never again.

It is a rare fiction book that I will reread. Most fiction is pretty much throwaway for me, which is why I have switched to mostly ebooks or using the library. I don't collect fiction books anymore with the exception of a very few.

The last book I reread was a Star Trek book. And yes, I plan on rereading more of them.

I often re-read chapters of books that I liked.
Being french, i sometimes get a book in english that I read in french before.
And finally, having read a lot of books (especially Sci-Fi ones), I have been accidentally re-reading the beginning of a few books before realizing the storyline reminded me something

LoTR several times, and King's The Stand even more times (the big unabridged version). It's not something I do often, but every once in a while I'll pull out a favorite to reread.

I have a few well worn favorites that I read many times, some to the point that I have had to buy replacements because they fell apart. I have an extensive collection of photography books which are in paper form. I also have an extensive collection of PDF files which are referred to on a constant basis for work (well they were before I became ill and will be again when I get back to work) which I have on the Iliad. As for fiction e-books, so far they tend to be one off reads.

I feel it necessary to reread a series when a new book comes out. This was especially true for WOT. I am one of the few who didn't consider the story to drag during the middle. I have enjoyed every single book, and continue to do so after every reread.

BK (before kids), I would re-read fairly often. Now, I just have enough time to read the new books, and little to no time for re-reading. I think I'm up to 3 shelves of unread books now, so I won't be re-read anytime soon.

I keep a metal cabinet full of my favorite writers to reread like: Robert Jordan, Robin Hobb, Raymond Feist, Dave Duncan, Mercedes Lackey, Dennis McKiernan, Patricia Briggs, R. A. Salvadore, Lee Child, Bernard Cornwell and George R. R. Martin (if he would just finish the Feast of Crows series) among others. Lost about 12 e-books when my computer crashed and I wasn't smart enough to keep my original MS Reader info. They are like old friends. Some of my grandchildren are starting to read some of them. Good series writers in genre's I like are hard to find.

i often reread my ebooks. and i do have my favorite always with me!
that's why i love ebooks, easy to transport and read everywhere.
it's a pity that new books always come on death-tree's first, and those that are published in ebooks have DRM, so that it's nearly impossible to transport them.

Ok... I voted Never. There are just too many books in the world that I don't want to spend time reading the same one twice.

That said, I do save my books and others in my house, mostly my teen soon read them too. He has read many of them more than once. He read the full Sword of Truth series 3 times I think.

BTW: How do you folks keep track of book's you've read. I was thinking of getting a Groqit (http://www.groqit.com/) but it won't work well with eBooks.

I usually just re-read books in a series. I don't think I could continue to read Steve Erikson if I didn't do some re-reading occasionally. Egads those books are complicated!

I have seen it argued that re-reading a book is a totally different activity then reading it for the first time. But I think that mostly applies when you read things deeply. I reread and the experience is a bit different but not so much. The experience is very similar to reading the book the first time so if it was a very good bok that you enjoyed very much the first time than it is definitely worth rereading.

I have an SGML file that is my book register and where I note down when I read a book. So I know how many times I have read each book I have or have borrowed. I started writing down what I read 1979 just when I started reading non-juvenile books.

@tompe: I definitely agree about the re-reading thing. There are even books that I have enjoyed significantly more the 2nd time around.
