Do you have any of Stieg Larsson eBooks? They do have embedded fonts and you could have a go at seeing if it works for you. The eBooks I tried out are fine. They work in ADE under Windows, in the Sony Reader PRS-650 and with Bluefire on the iPad. So given that they work in other ADE implementations, I'd say it's either an issue with the Kobo's (both wifi and not) or it's an issue with the demo Kobo's on display at Borders. |

I'm currently reading a DRM free BeWrite published book that definitely is displaying embedded fonts on my Kobo. I am also reading Annabel, sideloaded through Calibre and just looked at Absurdistan, in Kobo DRM format, both of which display italics. True italics? Maybe, Maybe not.
I do know that Kobo is working hard on improving the appearance of the kepub formatted books. Jordan (JCKobo) would be the man with the answers on this. Last edited by taming; 11-26-2010 at 02:48 AM. |

What I want to know is why Jordan has not chimed in on this.

As mentioned in the future requests thread, embedded fonts that are not declared with a 'body' selector do show up, but the font-family request is not recognized if it has got the body selector.
JC may be trying to get the new firmware for the Bluetooth Kobos out the door... I'd like to see that pretty soon ![]() Jon - how about we work on epub conformance testing down in the epub forum? I don't think the IDPF will ever get around to it, since Apple and Adobe don't bother to conform. |

I just took a look at two publisher eBooks and the place they used to turn on the font family is in the body in the CSS. This isn't so much a conformance issue as it is a bug. ADE works fine with the font-family in body. So since ADE works, it's what Kobo did with ADE in their version that's at fault. Last edited by JSWolf; 11-27-2010 at 09:23 PM. |

Anyway, I have few questions regarding that. After w3c, all tasks should be set in css. Where is declaration for new font? In css or in text file? Where is the very font itself? I'm aware that html/xml moves and that specs I knew might be pretty obsolete now. My observation was that reader went the safe way and tried to conform to something "common". I will reread complaints on the subject. I still see it as a feature, not a bug, no offend. Edit: After more reading of forum posts and w3, seems like css cannot find the font. Another option is that it was not intended at the very start. Last edited by zoran; 11-28-2010 at 12:57 AM. |

The kepub format is a work in progress and they are working with various changes to the way it handles CSS. If I wanted a WiFi reader under $150 that handles ePUB, and the font handling was a major issue for me, I would sideload through ADE or Calibre and wait it out. But that's me.
Keep in mind that the preloaded free books are generally conversions of Project Gutenberg books and leave much to be desired compared to what you get when you get a book prepped for Kobo. The readers in the store also do not run the latest version of the firmware. The latest tic to the firmware for the WiFi reader was done specifically so it could handle changes to books after they have been downloaded without having to resync the entire library. It may be that as the CSS handling is improved, even older books will see the changes. I am not minimizing the issue, but it also seems to me that people make choices balancing cost and what their "must have" issues might be. It's possible that you have identified a "must have" that is not particularly high on most people's lists. This does not mean it shouldn't be fixed, but it may mean that it may not be at the top of the list of things they are working on at present. Did you PM JC about this? The Kobo reader so far is the biggest waste of my time EVR. It is totally WORTHLESS.
EVERY document in my e-book library downloaded to Kobo is too small to read and I cannot make type larger. KOBO is using the Sergeant Schultze response to my complaints ("I know Nussing!") They refuse to set up a server so customers to download updating software. I had to rattle Borders here in Florida from whom I got it and they say I have to get the SD card from them and re-install the current software. I am handicapped, cannot drive and they have to mail it to me. If it doesn't work I am S.O.L. and Borders says they will replace it with a reader that DOES. Rotsa ruck I say! yodar |

Kobo is a Linux device. You can't just download firmware like it was a windows update. Return your device if it is defective. I assume you tried both using the big button and the menu to adjust font size.

Not exactly sure what you're b*tching about here, but your rants hold no merit. This ereader does what it's designed to do - allow someone to READ BOOKS! |

Am I the only one still having the problem I mentioned earlier in this thread? That is whenever I sync my Kobo, it syncs all the books already on the device all over again. This takes considerable time when all I want to do is simply sync my new purchase(s). I have the original kobo running firmware 1.4 and am using Kobo desktop software 1.7.5. Everything was fine until I updated to 1.7.4, then to 1.7.5. Any thoughts out there? Thanks!

Sorry if this has been asked already, but it's worth checking because I find my Kobo likes to change itself - are the clocks on your Kobo and your desktop set to the correct time and time zone?
